Without turning this into a political battle, it goes without saying that there is no excuse for our returning wounded receiving anything less than the absolute best. Whatever it takes, for however long it takes.

Plans to close Walter Reed by 2011 ?
Take a $10 billion dollar slice out out some pork pie and build an ultra-modern facility within 2 years.
No excuses. None.

The wounded private deserves the same, if not better, treatment than the Presidents of the United States receive when THEY go to Walter Reed.

there is lengthy article on the same subject at washingtonpost.com (you do have to register to read it).
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Agreed. No matter what you think of this war or what your politics are, the ones fighting and dying should receive nothing less than the cutting edge when returning to our nation.

That blows. Move some to other facilities such as Hopkins for the time being and fix/ redo the place right. No excuse on this one...

Even after the war is over, the investment can go to helping civillians. I don't know how we can build a bridge to nowhere but not a hospital fit for our military soldiers.
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

For the past 20 years the VA has been consolidating services into fewer and fewer locations. Making veterans travel much greater distances. There is a limit to efficiency, sometimes the gov't just needs to do the right thing.

And the VA makes vets jump through endless hoops. My friend Johnny had a bad back which was service related. They put him off. His leg went numb down to the toes, completely numb. They put him off and put him off. It was too late by the time they operated- his leg is now permanently numb and he must wear a brace.

We'll all be on VA care soon. That's where universal health care will lead.

OOPs- I didn't realize I'd raised the dead and this old thread.
