Is it necessary or even possible to hook up something like an Onkyo DX-C390 cd player to a HK 3480 stereo receiver using the optical or coaxial outputs the Onkyo cd player has? There is no optical or coaxial inputs inthe back of the HK however, just red and white

if your receiver does not have an optical input... the answer is no. it can't be done going the optical route. you would have to use the red and white RCA plugs

Well, not unless you pick up a separate DAC. You'd stick the optical into a DAC, and the RCA into your onkyo.

Other than that, no luck for you.

Not really, your just using the Onkyo's internal DAC's. You might squeeze better sound out of it by going to an good external DAC, but since your running a receiver, i don't think it would be worth the dime(s). No offense, just understand that receivers are limited in their resolution, especially for the subtle changes an external DAC will provide versus it's cost.

Ok well then in that case I think the best thing I should do is just upgrade the red and white cables the cd player came with because I hear the factory cables are junk. Should that do anything? I can get Monster Ultra 600 THX RCA cables for extremely cheap. Like 25 bucks
