 I was watching MI 3 this evening and when the bridge scene was on I heard a buzz then smoke and my center channel amp got fried,
Boy was I pissed and I checked the fuse which was burned and I opened the amp up and the heat sink smelled burnt and the caps right next to it ,
so my question is what could have fried and how much do you guys think it will cost?
It is an audiosource amp 100 bridged to 160 watts which really never even got warm for the past 2 years I have owned it and now poof.:(

Perhaps it's because it was bridged. Most amps when bridged can not drive low impedence's (below 8 ohms). My guess is it finally gave up the ghost in a big way. Another possibility is just plain old component failure. But if I had to guess running the center in bridged mode might have been to much for the amp long term.

Is it possible that the speaker cables were touching? (i.e. even a few of the positive strands were wandering over to visit with the negative terminal (or vice versa) That would create a 0 ohm load (or there abouts) and could easily fry a bridged amp.

Other than that - just unlucky timing. (didn't spill anything into it did you??)

    Michael

(anyway - sorry to hear about the amp, but glad to hear about the relatively inexpensive fix)
    Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
    Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
    Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
    Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
    Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms)

I use heavy duty banana plugs and none of the strands were touching ,and as for spilling anything on the amp it was sitting on top of an A/V rack and I have no kids in my home.

Sorry to hear what happened to your amp Lou.

I would also guess that it happened because it was bridged. From what I hear it is not a very nice thing to do to an amp even though they say it can be done.

I would take the opportunity to simply get a more powerful amp and wire it straight.

    Amp repair update,
my buddy rplaced the outputs and the caps and after a while of testing it blew out again. (good thing there was no charge)
I think I'm just going to just save my pennies and buy a used amp or try to find one on the bay since I still have $105.00 left over in my paypal account from a gift certificate.

If the speaker is OK, then it probably isn't the output transistors, but it is still a good place to work back from. I'd check em anyway if you smelled something on the heatsink.
