Ceiling Surrounds? Anyone???

Do I have to say I disliked a polk product to get a response around here? ;)

asked in another thread, and still looking.

Have a pair of RT5s for the front channel, a csi25 (couldn't find a cs250s) for the center, and looking for a pair of in-ceiling surrounds to match for a 5.1 setup. The contenders are: AB710, RC60i, SC60, TC610i and (if I want to spend a bit more) TC60i.

Which of these would be the best match for the RT5? I can't find any AB710s anywhere... I could keep looking, but I can't find anywhere that these are even a match for the RT5 (I just know they are older than the current lines). The RC60i are the most affordable, but matched for the current monitor line... the SC and TC lines are both matched for the current RTi line and are presumably the better options of the new lines???

Also, the TC610i and SC60 are similar in price... is there a significant difference between the two? Is the TC60i worth the extra $$ for surrounds in this setup?

Thanks.

I always wondered it you could use inwall speakers in ceiling instead. That might be the way to go, and would sound pretty good to boot. I'm not sure which one's I would use with your line, I'm sure someone hear will chime in though.

You might also want to shoot an email into Polk Customer Service. They'll certainly straighten you out and they have the best CS of any company I've ever dealt with.

just to follow up in case anyone has the same question later on... polk cust service got back to me...

they said, yes, the TCi series is the best acoustic match, but that for the rear sourrounds, the RCi series would probably work just fine (as well as the SC series, but that it was only available through custom installers, and that it basically matched the RCi acoustically with the TCi cutouts). no word on the AB710, but looks like is was not intended as a part of the RT home theater package (probably intended to be RT3 for surround???).

now i just need another 60 replies or so to catch up with "I'm unsatisfied with Polks" ;)

    Welcome to Club Polk
    Sometimes I too feel invisible.
Not too many people use in ceiling speakers. I'm not against them. I'd actually would like to hear some. Did you actually call Polk, or just shoot them an email. They are very nice to talk too, and I think that is a better route than an email.

    Ben
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks
    Ben

email... they got back quickly (~36 hours) and answered most of my questions (and even a few I didn't ask)... pretty good considering I was asking about matching middle of the road speakers I purchased 10 years ago (middle of the road speakers I REALLY like by the way :D ). most companies would try to talk me into buying a new setup all around. I bought a CS250-S on ebay today for $50 as well... considering a second set of RT5 (locally for $100 for a pair). yes, today was a good day.

no they didn't, but then again, I didn't ask. don't see why not... pretty much the same parts (including aimable tweeter). the only significant differences I can see are in weight and depth; the in-walls are about 1 lb heavier (shipping weight) and the ceiling speakers are about 1/2 an inch deeper. you can always build an enclosure for the in-walls if they like tight spaces.

As far as I understand it (which probably isn't saying much), the only reason people don't normally use in-wall speakers in-ceiling is because it looks more normal to have square speakers in the walls and round ones in the ceiling. Other than that I don't imagine there are any good reasons to not use in-walls in the ceiling.
