Just received a beautiful vintage Marantz, but it was slightly damaged in transit. Any hints or advice regarding the straightening of a bent corner? Words of wisdom deeply appreciated. Illustration attached. Thanks!

I would say you need to take it apart and put the corner of the face plate in a large vice. Use some protection on the jaws of the vice so as to not scratch the face plate.

Keep in mind you may very well just be weakening the faceplate even more if you attempt to straighten it out, and might even end up snapping that corner off entirely.George Grand wrote: »

Crap. I didn't think about snapping it off. The thing that sux the most is the unit is mint other than the new bend. The guy I bought it from is equally sick and offered refund, but I want unit and will even keep as is if need be. You've raised another question in my mind...attempt to straighten vs live with damage. Crap again.Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Friend.

I don't think any part of it will snap off. Those faceplates are plenty thick, plus, he doesn't need to bend it back all that much either. But in order to do it right, the faceplace needs to come off and get "squeezed" between to flat surfaces.
I know this because one of the vintage amps I got had a corner bent like that, and let me tell you that it's next to impossible to straighten in out in place like that.

apc,
Hang on to the receiver and be patient. Work a deal with the seller to kick you back some coin. Face plates show up all the time on eBay of some of the other parts, sellers on line. You may even be able to find a whole unit that is broken and has a nice face for just a few bucks. Sorry to hear about the misfortune, but don't get too discouraged. Stay in it for the long run. Buy another vintage receiver until you can get the parts to make this one a show room piece. Good luck!Carl -
try a body shop that does stuff by hand...or a bike shop that does custom bikes
They make and bend fenders and tanks all the time..ya might find an old metal fab guy from the old days that can fix er up..
Just a thought...
Probably the best solution is to wait until you find a replacement face like stated earlier..

There doesnt seem to be a real crease in it so the danger of snapping it off it relativley low. Take your time cover it in masking tape and straighten it. Of course after youve recieved reimbursement from the seller or shipper one. That one looks to be easy..... " He who dies with the most equipment wins Right ? "

Sorry to see that vintage piece damaged. I had a guy ship an amp to me that got damaged. "Oh yes, it will be packed well...." One layer of bubblewrap and he tossed it into a box.
Aluminum is soft and stretches easily. As long as you don’t bend it back and forth, it won’t break off. Cast aluminum would snap, but that isn’t cast.
I've used a couple of pieces of scrap hardwood with some duct tape over it. Pine wood is too soft. You can use the vice with hardwood on either side, or lay it down on some hardwood, lay another piece of hardwood on it and give the wood a whack directly above the bend crease. Whatever you feel most comfortable with.
I had an amp with a bent faceplate that came out OK. It was done with the hammer method. It is faster and doesn't flex and heat the area as much as slowly bending it. The repair won’t be perfect, but at least it won’t be so obvious.Salk SoundScape 8's * Audio Research Reference 3 * Bottlehead Eros Phono * Park's Audio Budgie SUT * Krell KSA-250 * Harmonic Technology Pro 9+ * Signature Series Sonore Music Server w/Deux PS * Roon * Gustard R26 DAC / Singxer SU-6 DDC * Heavy Plinth Lenco L75 Idler Drive * AA MG-1 Linear Air Bearing Arm * AT33PTG/II & Denon 103R * Richard Gray 600S * NHT B-12d subs * GIK Acoustic Treatments * Sennheiser HD650 * -
That faceplate is damaged beyond what SComp encountered....good luck, but you're out of it. That piece will never be the same and any hint of resale is in the toilet.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I agree with Carl, there are folks parting out vintage pieces all the time, there are a few vintage gear sites around,,,find one and ask questions, something will come up....good luck -

The aluminum may need to be heated before bending it back to avoid cracking.

Ditto. It's the seller's problem to deal with. -
Hey , I orded a new face plate from carver for my tfm-35 30.00 makes the amp look like brand new..... Mine was just scratched up ...I got it from a pawn shop.
If it cracks or starts it will crack on the back side first. In the pics it doesnt look to be bent so bad it will crack on the way back........ " He who dies with the most equipment wins Right ? "
