Is 35 watts added to your main speakers only from the receiver going to do any significant change it performance?

    What are you asking??

Is 35watt/channel suffice for speakers?? What speakers, what receiver do you have? There are many variables that would make 35 watts ok.

I mean, my current receiver(yamaha htr-5740) puts out around 85 wpc in stereo. So if I were to get something with 120 watts per channel(HK3480) in stereo would that make a signicant difference in sound? Its a difference of around 30 or so watts...I have the rti8's

I am planning on picking up the HK today from everyone help i had earlier...just wondering what more the HK is gonna do

Yes, that H/K will beat the snot out of those Yammy watts by a huge margin!

You will be a lot happier driving the RTi's with the H/K over that Yammy.

It won't add much more volume, but the added current from the HK should tighten up the lowend.

Also the HK is likely to be a little warmer sounding than the Yamaha, which IMO is a good thing for the RTi8s.

    Go for it.

One thing I can say with absolute certainty: 35 watts going to your main speakers from your receiver only is going to sound WAY better than 0 watts going to your speakers (unless you are listening to gangsta rap).

To achieve a 3db increase in volume, you have to double the amount of power.....

I know the point he was trying to make Russ, but it still doesn't answer the question of how much power he should be looking to get to make a real difference.

Put it in WPC so that he gets his question answered. I know you techies don't think much of WPC, but that is all they talk about in the B&M stores & most vendor websites.

It is also how he phrased the question, so he should be answered in kind.

PF1, if your receiver has preouts get a separate amplifier in the 200wpc catagory. You can get the best bang for your buck by getting used.

If not, then update your receiver first making sure it has preouts & then later down the line get a separate amp.

I was merely making a point that many seem to miss. 30wpc either way is negligible (which I thought my statement made obvious)

As far as how much power is needed? Hell, I dunno. Too many variables. Room size, listening tastes etc etc.

Moreover, most people are going to disagree but I contend that a good 50wpc with 2db of headroom is MORE than sufficient for nearly all applications. However, everyone else seems to be on the big power bandwagon. Whatever floats your boat.
