This 2006 release is available on CD and 180 gram vinyl. I have the CD. I have not listened to a lot of Mark’s solo work. I have Emmy Lou Harris’ “Wrecking Ball” CD which is very good.

This album has a definite bluegrass/country influence in the music. Some of the songs are dark, gritty and downright haunting. “I Dug up a Diamond”, “Donkeytown” and “Rollin On” fit this description. Other’s are very upbeat and will have your foot tapping. “Beachcombing” and “Red Staggerwing” are the foot tapping variety’ “Love and Happiness” was written buy Emmy Lou and are similar to a number of her sad, ballad variety songs (very nice).

Mark’s and Emily’s voices blend very nicely in harmony. Emmy Lou’s voice is very crisp, sometimes mesmerizing. The guitar work is exceptional. Mark didn’t disappoint me here. Intricate, clean picking that people loved about Dire Straits. Mark can make a guitar sing softly, cry loudly or run a rhythm down your spine. The sound engineer did a wonderful job recording capturing the instruments and voices.

I think this is an exceptional piece of music if you like a little gritty country sound, featuring great vocals, some rhythm, and complex guitar work.

Yes. The live CD doesn't separate itself much from the studio CD. The DVD is excellent.

How come I don't know who Emmy Lou Harris is?

I could listen to Mark Knofler play guitar all day but his vocals don't agree with me on some stuff.

I don't know shes' been around a long time:

Emmylou made her first record "Gliding Bird" in New York in 1970. In Wahington DC she met Gram Parsons, who was looking for a girl singer to work with him. He introduced her into Country music. In 1973 Gram Parsons died.

On her 1975 major label Debut, Pieces of the Sky, she introduced her Hot Band, which over the years has included such world-class players as Albert Lee, Rodney Crowell and Hank DeVito.

Emmylou has achieved seven no. 1 and 27 top 10 hits, including, "If I Could Only Win Your Love," "Together Again," "Sweet Dreams," "Making Believe," "To Daddy," "Heartbreak Hill," and "Heaven Only Knows." She's earned 6 Grammys, 8 gold albums, and her 1987 Trio album with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton is Platinum-plus.

    Country that's why.

Country has never been popular in my locale. The closest thing we have had has been a few country bars that never lasted too long and ended up converting but keeping the same name.

Emmylou was considered folk/rock back when she got her start and probably gravitated to county/rock along with performers like Linda Ronstadt, Gram Parsons, Roy Orbison, Neil Young and Chris Hillman. She's really a crossover artist and her music is a blend of rock/folk/Ameicana/country. You may hear her on county stations today but she never got a lot of airplay on the traditional county venues in the past.

I love Mark K's work his lyrics, atleast with Dire Straits are awesome. I just acquired the HDCD of Dire Straits "Sultans of Swing," a compliation and it is just awesome. . . with one exception, they used the politically correct version of "Money for Nothing." Damn it I hate when they do that, they ruin a perfectly great song.

I heard some of his solo work at Phil's, he is something else.

Aside from the obvious Dire Straits, Shangri-la is my only reference for the solo work. I don't think this would be in my regular shopping but may have to check it out.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Yeah I am not big on Shangri-la. The vocals on there are what just don't agree with me. However, there are a couple of live song on Ragpickers Dream that I love, primarily because of the guitar work.

In the 70's EmmyLou was hot.

I'm hardly a country music buff now, let alone when I was in my 20's, but I found Elite Hotel to be very accessible when it was released. Once it intro'd me to her, the definitely more country Quarter Moon... was enjoyable as well.
    More later,

Did anyone see them together on pbs/soundstage last night?

It started a little weak but they pulled it off. Knopfler's guitar work was superb and Emmy Lou's vocals and harmonies are still some of the best around.

Yup lol. You ever notice how some gals seem to fade out after a while but others seem to have this timeless beauty that last forever? In fact some seem to grow more beautiful as they grow older.
