HD-DVD & Blu-Ray owners...

Okay, this question is more directed to members that own both formats but eveyone else feel free to reply. I currently own a HD-XA1 but I've been thinking of purchasing the BP-1000 from Samsung, too many movies on Blu-Ray to pass up. Anyways, here is my question, how do/would you go about hooking up both units as far as the audio side of things.

Right now I have both the fiber optic and 5.1 analogs hooked up to my pre/pro. Would it be possible to say purchase a y-splitter with a single male end and dual female ends and hook up to the pre/pro this way or would this not work. This way, which ever player, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray is playing the player sends the signal to the pre/pro.

I see you are probably looking at a good deal on that Samsung player since they don't make them anymore? There is a new revised version(BP-1200) soon to hit the market if you are intersted?

Obviously no HDMI, could you go the coaxial route?

I agree with you on the BR movies, too many out to pass up... I play mine on a PS3. Trying to get my new XA2 to work at the moment, had no problems with the XA1.

I tried what you are talking about for a while, with the splitters, and it seem to work fine with my HK. Just make sure that you don't turn them both on at the same time.

^ No kidding! That would be the only problem I can see with the splitter route...

Yeah, that and in my setup the calibration levels where different with the Samsung and the Toshiba via the 5.1 analogs, and since the the Samsung will not decode any of the new audio formats and I really couldn't tell that much difference between the DD and the uncompressed PCM tracks on BD I decided to just use the analogs for HD-DVD, I love me some TrueHD, and use the optical out on the Samsung

Apparently I haven't researched a whole lot into the BP-1000, if I had known it didn't decode the new formats I'd never have asked this question. Thanks guys.

Well that can be a little misleading, as far as I know there are only three sound options that you can get on BD, if I am wrong someone correct me, that is DD, uncompressed PCM, the Samsung can decode those no problem, and DTS-MA (which no BD player will decode at this time you can only get the DTS core), so you really aren't losing anything by going with the Samsung. When I said that it won't decode the new sound formats I ment that it won't decode DD+, TrueHD, I havn't seen either on BD not to say it won't come though, and DTS-MA.

Actually, there seems to be precious few titles coming out in True-HD, but there is an avalanche of titles coming out in DTS-MA.

It's a crime that hardware companies are so slow to release firmware updates and out of the box players that can handle this format...

Why don't you get the PS3 instead? I have read better reviews on it as far as Blu Ray playback.

I had my A1 wired up with the analogs but once I tried the PCM tracks on BD I switched over. The A1 gets the coax conncection and the Sammy gets the analog. The PCM tracks are just as impressive as the TrueHD titles and most BD titles have that track where as very few HD-DVDs have TrueHD.

As for wiring both up with Y-splitters, I don't know, I was told not to do that but never asked why.

Ron how did you calibrate your samsung (I use Avia) with the analogs since the Samsung converts DD 5.1 tracks to 2 channel when the audio out is set to PCM for the analogs? I tried using the test tones from the player but I could never get the sub to level out with the rest of my speakers. That was the main problem I had with the analogs on the Sammy I always used the setting from my A1 and I didn't find that the PCM was that great but it could be a set up issue.

I had problems with the coax connection and the Sammy where DD was being converted into 2-channel but with the analog connection everthing plays fine. I calibrate with AVIA but usually I end up tweaking it beyond that to what my ears like.
