Format War Ended Today for Me

Waited and waited on a PS3 to arrive in stores on the military bases in Japan. Took forever and what seemed to be no such luck. I didnt really want to buy into another game system, I have the 360 already, and pretty much wanted a stand alone player. Went into the base stores today and say the Panny Blu ray player priced at 1100 bucks even, still a tad too pricey. Walked down the aisle a bit and spotted the Sony BDPS1(only 1 that came in), at what I thought was a good price of 899.00. I get up to the register to pay for it and it comes up to 730.00 new in the box.

Setup was a breeze, I grabbed the update online before reviewing any software. Put in Iceage 2 and was like no way. I was like wow, very nicely done. The Sq and Pq definitely shined on the 7100es. LFE was outstanding on the SVS. Load times seem to be about the same as my A1. I have a few more movies to watch, Kingdom of Heaven, Black Hawk Down, Fifth Element came in the box. So the war came to an end for me today, finally Im freaking happy and for some time done with buying HT products. Game Over, I win.

Give me a shout when you return to San Dog. There's a wicked quesadilla shop in Oceanside I've been thinking about. Gotta love those register instant discounts.

Yep, once you take the plunge, there's nothing else to do but sit back and enjoy. You should really like BHD. The audio is great and the PQ is near reference quality. (It's got a gritty look, and bright colors, but I think that's the way the director wanted it to look.) To see an almost perfect disk in terms of pq and sq, I'd at least rent flyboys. While people complain about the acting and romance, it makes a great demo disk to really see what blu-ray is capable of. Enjoy!

I watched Ice Age 2, PQ is 3d like, LFE had me blown away, the amount of bass the PB12 plus 2 was putting out. On my A1 I had to make small adjustments with the LFE, the BDP S1 it just did its thing. Very happy with the purchase.

Bought my first Blu-Ray disc the other day. AVP and it is very nice. I like the instant pop up menus. The sound and pq are excellent. The best reference disc so for is suppose to be "The Wild". I want to pick up Underworld next but it is hard to find. Good Stuff!

Congrats on the purchase of the BDPS1. I'm sure you'll enjoy the fantastic PQ and audio that Blu-Ray has to offer.

I, for one, will be waiting for either an affordable hybrid player or for the format war to come to a conclusive end. A nice upconverting DVD player will suffice for now.

    Cheers.

I don't mean to burst your bubble I really don't. But I think if you have the ability to return it you might want to investigate the issue. Already it has been noted the Sony BD player can't support CD and has problems with certain Blu Ray disc's. Also it has no internal decoders for Dolby Digital True HD and DTS HD which are new uncompressed surround formats. I've also heard of people having problems with the HDMI connection. Perhaps you aren't but I'd keep an eye open.

There is hardly anything out there in any format that can support True HD out of the box, and I haven't seen a DTS-HD master audio player yet. So you're basically telling him to wait. Evidently he's not having problems with his connection, do you have a link to a problem with Blu-ray disks?

Yeah perhaps, Im thinking of buying some new power cords. And I do have a dedicated CD player in my main system for music, not to mention a 2 channel rig that includes a Oppo 981 that plays almost everything. So Im good, and nope havent had any issues with the player. And the movies you are talking about that the sony wouldnt play, the firmware update were released recently, so I grabbed the updates before I even played the first movie on it. Got the PS3 coming for the bedroom also, so Im good. Thanks for the concern though.

Great to hear! I'm going to wait awhile before jumping on the high-rez bandwagon, but from everything I've read so far, I'm leaning toward Blu-Ray.

Also, thanks for serving in the military and helping to protect me and my family. I grew up in Columbus, GA, right next to Ft. Benning. My dad was not in the army, but about 75%+ of my friends were "army brats". I just missed the vietnam war. I turned 18 in 1973 as a senior in high school. I had to register for the draft, but then the war was brought to an end. Looking back now, I kind of wish I had done some time in the military. It would have made a better man out of me, I'm sure. What branch of the service are you in? (Sorry for sidetracking the thread)

No longer military but youre welcome. Served from 95-2002(left 3 days after high school graduatin), USMC all the way. Toured afghan as my last duty for 7 months before calling the military career a wrap(got tired of playing hiding and go seek for Bin Laden). No regrets at all, seen allot and damn sure did allot.

No lotto won but I do work as a contract GS13 for the government.

    ^Nice, GS13...

May I ask what you do? Might jump on some contract work myself, just not ready to go back overseas again. Pay is definetly tempting...
