People are oblivious to where they're walking regardless. Whenever I stop by the Mall of America, I'm reminded of this.
I understand where the Senator's trying to go with this. But if you're enough of an idiot to walk in a crosswalk in NYC without looking for cars, iPod or no iPod, better get ready for the consequences.

There was actually a (awful) movie just made with that premise, Phantom - Idiocracy. Essentially, Luke Wilson was frozen for 1000 years, and woke up to a civilization of idiots, where he was the smartest person in the world.

The premise had promise, but in execution it was just way too retarded.
