For any of you RTS lovers out there, they just released the Demo for Supreme Commander, the sequel to Total Annihilation, IMO the best RTS ever made.

If you don't know what it's about, here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHothxZQoWo

Basically, unlike starcraft and other recent RTS's, the idea is to build huge, and I mean HUGE, armies and run them at the enemy, concentrating on macro tactics vs. micro management. Think of it like being a general vs. being a captain in other RTS's. There are varying level of units of course, with several "super" units which can do huge amounts of damage.

I played the demo lastnight for a couple of hours, and I gotta tell you, it's a blast. I love the idea of queuing up 100's of units at a time and sending them all in to attack someone. This is a game of a huge number of defenses countering huge numbers of units... leading to absolute carnage when the battle ensues.

And there is real strategy involved. Timing is everything, and if you're not careful, bad things will happen if you don't watch what's going on. Also, you can't just rush one unit type at a time, you've really gotta mix them up if you want to be effective, which is a great change over Starcraft where multiplayer is usually dominated by single unit gameplay.

I also liked not having to micro manage my units: they were smart enough to figure out how to help each other, knew which units should lead the charge while other units should provide support. It's very nice not having to worry about your artillery leading the way with your short range tanks taking up the rear, since that'll often lead to your attack failing in other games.

I also like having super powered units. They aren't easy to make and take a lot of time and resources to build them. But you get a couple of them going... My favorite there is the mobile factory that has tank treds and can move, which has something like 6-8 high powered cannons and can produce units in the midst of battle. Having that guy followed by a couple of crawling battleships can make for a very interesting game and interesting strategies.

I recommend you check it all out! It's an excellent game so far, and I can't wait for it to come out on Feb 20th!

The game has taken my life away from my family. I feel trapped, like the first time I played C&C. Save your progress often!

Agreed... When you least expect it, they'll send a spider after ya!

Gonna pick it up when it comes out on the 20th? I'll play you a game or two if you're up for it.
