A little more info would helpful. Tubes, SS or both? What about HDCD and upsampling? 2 channel or multi-channel? Single disc or spinner? What gear will it be connected to?

In addition to the Bada, a number of folks like the Rotel 1072, although I've never heard it. Also the Music Hall 25.2 has a following and I pretty sure it does HDCD.

Any chance of getting a listen to some players in your area?

With a CC deposit, any shop should let you take a piece home. If you're not opposed to buying used, take a look on Audiogon. Plently of good deals to be found there.

Did you check out the flea market here on the forum? There's a superb Consonance CD120 for sale. Excellent piece, at an excellent price. Reviews are also listed. If interested let me know. You would be hard pressed to find a better player at that price point & even higher.

You can get an Underwood modified Onix CD-5 for about $750 to $850 depending upon the level of upgrade. It also keeps its 3 year warranty.

For stock, Onix is blowing out their CD3's for $699 as they are moving their warehouse.

    I'd be looking at:

    -Rotel RCD-1072
    -Music Hall 25.2
    -Ah! Njoe Toeb
    -Rega Apollo
    -Cambridge 840A
    -Marantz SA8001

Don't sweat "HDCD" compatability, HDCD's sound great on standard redbook players.

Not much under a $1000. It's my understanding that the Apollo is head of the class at its pricepoint. I don't know if it's been mentioned, but the Music Hall 25.2 has somewhat of a warmer presentation. I believe you will find the same desired traits in the Ah! Njoe Toeb w/upsampler.

The Arcam is also a stellar unit, but for different reasons. Detail retrieval and pace is thru the roof and as such, can be a very exciting piece.

If you're not that interested in HDCD, that opens up a lot of other options.

The Apollo is the "new & improved" Planet. Getting good reviews so far...if you're wanting a warmer sound, the Ah! might be the ticket--it's tubed.

Just receiced my Ah! 4000 today, upsampler,pc,etc, jan phillips tubes, although I've only listened to a couple of songs,it seems to have smoother highs, liquid mids. Granted I need more listening time, the good thing about it is,,I paid 600.00 shipped, used, but it seems to be worth every penny,,just my .02 worth :)

Thanks,, I felt that I was struggling with my source(Rotel 965 bx) that I purchased new in 92,,,having done just about everything that I could to my 2.3's,caps,tweets,binding post, aquiring new amps, tube pre. The top end seemed somewhat grainy,,,after only a few songs the AJ seemed to be smoother in the highs, and that tubey, liquid, almost velvet type of midrange seemed to be more present,,,ah,, it just sounds better to me,,I think that I'm finished with that system,, time to enjoy :)

Comet... here's one without the upsampler, if you're interested. While George's is the lowest price I have ever seen for one with the upsampler, I have to say ditto on this one without the upsampler. The only reason this may have not moved yet is because he doesn't take Paypal and he has one negative feedback.

    http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?dgtlplay&1176069769

Usually these last a couple of hours tops on the 'gon -- at a higher price. It may be worth your time to at least contact the seller. All other upgrades are included it seems.

edit: he doesn't mention the stabilizer or shoes

That is a great deal you got on the Ah! George! When I had my Ah! I tried it without the upsampler and quickly put it back in. It is a worthy addition. My fav tubes in it were the Ediswan 6922's.

George, how about a review when you get it settled in? I'd love to hear your impressions on the Ah! This player has peaked my interest for a couple of years...
