I have a pair of Polk Audio rti8's and a yamaha htr-5740 receiver rated at around 85 watts per channel. I was thinking of upgrading to a pioneer elite vsx-80txv. WOuld this upgrade help reduce the brightness of these speakers and make them sound significantly better?

    Probably not...

It will be a little dificult trying to change the sound characteristics of those RTi's by changing the receiver to a Pioneer. You are essentially probably adding only a few watts more a channel, and the Pioneer really isn't on the "laid back" side to begin with.

You can try a few things that seemed to help me a tinny bit when I had RTi8's not to long ago.

    1. Remove the stock jumpers on the connection posts and replace with some good quality wire.

    2. I found this to help the most, especially at higher volumes. Adding external amplification, an amp rated at least 200wpc.

    3. You can always try and demo out the Pioneer with the RTi's and see what you think, the Yammy is known to be on the "brighter" side to begin with.

Hope this helps, as I had to go with the LSi series to solve my problems.

Maybe you could also try a Monster power conditioner. Say maybe a used HTS 2500 on Ebay. That helped me with some brightness in one of my new systems a few years ago.

I agree with the most of the statements above. As you can see from my signature I have an older Elite and RTi-10s. I also have a Monster 1100 power bar.

While I have not heard the VSX-80 I would not call my Elite/RTi combo laid back and depending on your other sources it can be way too bright. I did make wire jumpers which has helped a little and plan to upgrade my interconnects. However I will be slowly migrating to B&K separates as my budget allows for the ultimate fix.

Were I in your position I would look into HK receivers. You could even pick up a cheap HK with pre-outs and get a good used external amp for the retail price of that Pioneer. My .02.

I hate to say this, but I'd look into different speaks if you are looking for such a drastic change in sound.

Exactly what I did. The HK as a Pre works very well. I had a Yami, and I wouldn't even think about selling it to someone who truly cared about sound quality. I run Adcom amps from the pre out on the HK that I picked up from HK direct on Ebay for about $250. I have been real happy with my setup.

By conditioning power and making it "cleaner". It will improve or give different improvments audio and video in many cases. HomeTheater mag did a huge artical about it a few months ago.

Yes I am . It just did. I had crappy power in my Town house and it was a pretty cheap improvement. It just removed a bit of 'etch'.

Cool. Didn't realize they would make a difference in sound.
