Energy Connoisseur Speakers??

Anyone familiar with this Canadian line? Somebody locally is selling a mint pair of C4's from about 1996. They are not set up (they're in his attic). He is an older gentleman who bought these at recommendation of his son and is not very audio "literate". Asking $170 but I know he will do better but not sure how much (I assume at least $150 or so).
Also has a Harmon Kardon AVR 25 II and an HK 8450 CD changer also in great condition. Asking $200 for those but also would do better. Not sure these are worth chasing but the speakers look interesting.
As usual, I don't need these nor really have anywhere to put them but why should that stop anyone??

Any thoughts on this stuff? I told the guy I would get back to him today.

I listened to the new models a few weeks ago. They are pretty nice. amazing imaging. Why dont you bring some speaker wire over, set them up with his h/k amp and cd player, and give them a listen? Then decide.

Energy is an excellent company. I had their C7's for quite a few years. Excellent speakers. They also produce the Veritas series which is extremely well respected in the upper end of the speaker market. I would not hesitate to purchase a pair of Energy speakers again. If the price is right for the pair you're looking at, I really don't know. Just try to get as good a deal as you can.

I used to sell the Connoisseur line, and its best selling point was imaging. We had a 2-Channel setup with Rotel equipment and C-7 towers. Having customers sit in a normal listening position was an easy way to win them over... it truly felt like the sound was coming from directly in front of you.

Thanks guys. Bought the speaks today for $65 each. Decided to grab the HK stuff too, just because I couldn't resist. Got both HK pieces for $120. $250 total. Seems pretty (very) good. Haven't hooked up anything yet but the speakers are absolutely mint. They are the older Connoiseur line (Model C4) that, from what very little I could find on the net, were very well received.
Now, how to hide from the boss..... -
Nice steal. I have a pair of the Energy C-3 and am very impressed. And you can't go wrong with older HK stuff. Well done.Von Schweikert VR4-jr

Have a pair of C-3 and C-1 myself.
As far as I remember, the C-4 would be a floorstanding speaker, right? I had the C-2 for a little while....I remember that was the only bookshelf speaker (and a huge one at that) in the Conneisseur line back then. -
Yes, the C4 is floorstanding. Very nice black gloss finish. I would have actually rather had the bookshelves as they would have been easier to place (WAF). The C4's probably have a little more omph to them. Still scratching my head about how/where to use them.. Just can't pass up good deals.

Sounds like a major score to me. From what I've read, the older (even-numbered) Connoisseur series was better than the later (odd-numbered) Connoisseur series. Given that the odd-numbered series sounded amazing, I can only imagine how those C-4, assuming they're in good condition, would sound.
I remember the older Connoisseur series also came in a glossy rosewood finish that was to die for.
Keep us updated on how you like your C-4. The manual for the C-4 is available online at http://www.energy-speakers.com/v2/products/classic-lines.php.

Pictures?? That would mean I have to drag them out of the garage hidden under the old towels. Someone might SEE them! Have to wait for the right moment like when I come home from typical Saturday yard sale. "Honey, he just gave them away, I had to take them for $50."
