CD Changers...

Whats the deal with CD changers? It seems that there are extremely limited options when considering mega storage changers. Im talking like 200-400 disk changers. To me its very valuable to have quick and easy access to all of my CDs at once.

What options are out there that are above your standard sony or pioneer 300 cd changers. Im using the sony cdp-cx355 300 changer. Its alright, but really nothing great. Is there anything else out there thats a little more upscale? It would need to hold at least 200 CDs.

I have a Sony cx455 changer, it holds 400 cd's. I noticed an improvement in SQ when I used an external DAC.

I have a cx985v. it holds 400. I have had no problems and the sound is good.
It also plays sacd albeit at the lesser state of conversion of pcm not dsd. I am very happy with it. I can play my concert dvd's with the tv off and really feel like I am there!

I was looking for something to hold all of my CD's, and the mega changers plastic construction, clunky operation, and slow disc load times did not appeal to me, so I went with a Yamaha CDR-HD1500.

    http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=200106&CTID=5002200

Although the specs claim it comes with a 200GB drive, mine arrived with a 300GB drive. That's enough for 469+ hours of uncompressed audio (that's the only option BTW). I have around 300 discs loaded currently, and there is 196 hours left. Being a hard drive, disc changes are instant, and silent. The drive is upgadeable to 500GB if needed.

List is $849, but I got mine for $520 delivered from an authorized dealer. They still have them, but they are now charging $580 delivered a month later.

I am very pleased with the sound off the hard drive, but I am looking for a DAC to see if I can further improve on it.

    WilliamM2,

Just out of curiosity, can the Yamaha server be "daisy chained" together?

probably more money than you're willing to spend, but it'll give you tons more options for now and the future if so desired.

    Danny,

No, but it holds 469 hours of music, and with a 500GB drive upgrade, it would hold about 800 hours of music. Can't imagine needing more than that. You could still connect two of them I suppose, and just switch inputs and have 800 more hours.

It's not a server though, it is just a CD recorder with a hard drive. That's why I picked it, I just want to turn the stereo on, and listen to music. If I wanted a server, it would have been cheaper to just use a computer.

thanks for the replies guys. But im really looking to stay with a CD changer. maybe an External DAC is something to look into...

as there appears to be no "higher end" stand alone CD changers

Jake, you're entirely correct about the convenience of the Sony megachangers; I'd never again seriously consider buying a single-disc player. However, in looking for something more "upscale" you're looking for something that isn't there performance-wise. The Sonys read what's on the discs(good or bad)without audible flaws. Relax and enjoy your music.

    +1 ;)

I hooked a 2K DAC to my changer, my ears no longer bleed its OK for company, dinner music , watching my little grandkids dance and so on, but there is no thrill for critical listening. The changer does make a nice storage unit.
