Upgrade to 7.1 System??

First thing is there is another thread similar to this one, but I did not want to hijack his.

I currently have a 5.1 system and now have a Panny Blu-ray that does 7.1 analogs (which my Onkyo 703 has), so now I want to expand my system to handle the 7.1 audio. My room is roughly 17' wide by 22' deep.

Here is my system now:

Polk RTi8's - Fronts
Polk FXi3's - Surrounds
Polk CSi5 - Center
SVS 20-39PCI - Subwoofer

So what would I need to match my current setup?

Onkyo TX-NR709 A/V Receiver
Polk RTi8's Front
In-Walls for Rears
CSi5 Center
SVS 20-39PCI Subwoofer

A pair of RTi4 will work nicely.

I am saying this because I have read in a number of places that most people prefer direct radiating back surrounds. Maybe it's a perception effect - "I want my back channel sound to come straight back".

This info may help some. My back surrounds will be mounted at ceiling height (10') on a wall.

    My setup is as follows:
    RTi70 mains (like RTi8's)
    CSi40 center (like CSi5)
    FXi30 sides (like FXi3)
    RTi28 rears (like RTi4)

    Sounds fantastic, looks great!

I contemplated another set of FXi's, but the THX, DD, and DTS recomendations are all for a set of monopoles at the rear.

Found an interesting article on the type of speakers used as side and back surrounds.

I would love someone running 7.1 (only running 5.1 here for now) to try the dipole on the back and direct radiating on the sides and let us know your impressions of both ways....

THX recommends dipoles on the side and monopole/direct on the rear in a 7.1 setup - at least when using THX Ultra2 processing.

I am glad to say that putting FXI30 as side surround and RTI4 as rear sounds great,my room is small 16x16,I was worried that all this sound would be to much, but wow was I wrong.:D

Did you try the RTi4's on the side and FXi30 in the back? Just wondering if you tried it and preferred the setup you have now?

(I have not tried either so have no opinion one way or the other.)

Knowing what you do now, would you recommend to people new to 7.1 to go fx series on the side and bookshelves on the rear or do you think fx series for the side AND back would sound best?

Ideally? FX on side and bookshelf in rear.

Not everyone has an ideal setup though.

For example if your seating is very close (or ON) the back wall, might be better off with bi/dipoles at the rear.

My seating is actually closer to the front wall than the rear, with a 6-ft window smack in the middle of the back wall, so the rear (SB) speakers will be 7-8 feet apart and 13-14 feet behind. Then the side surrounds are very close, the left one is almost on top of the couch, so I went with dipoles for the side.

I also have a THX Ultra2 receiver, and they recommend that setup.
