I had a Pio 1015, and took it back after a week. My 635 blows it away, in my opinion.

I would assume the same is correct when comparing the 1016 to the 245/345/445/645.

After spending all day doing my research I am going with the HK 245 and 2 m2200's

If I ever want more features in a receiver, I'll just replace the HK and keep the 2 m2200's rocking the speakers.

Now off to research good interconnects and speaker cable ;)

    The spending never ends!

I had a yamaha and my HK sounds way more natural than the yamaha. Anyone want to buy a Yamaha hardly used.

Signal Cable, Blue Jeans, and/or Zebra would be good one stop shops for all cable needs on the cheap. . . but great quality.

Not true. Yammie's in the 599.00 price range have pre-outs. It may be a little bright for the Rti's but it's got the pre-outs.

Never checked that model out. Stopped looking at them after I bought mine, and retired it. Like you said to bright (artifically bright/grainy).

    Stand corrected

I went from a rxv 540 to my HK335 and in the process of buying 2 more outlaw monos. My Hk sounds much better than the yamaha, and by far. Not sure where Lush is coming from saying something about HK being an old name....HK makes great products

I'm sure you will just be delighted using your HK and outlaw monos.
As for IC, I use Audioquest and some AR pro series II.

Keep us posted as to how you like your new setup once it's all put together.

Before people start jumping up and down, I have no doubt HK makes some nice products, the question at hand was what receiver to use as a pre-pro. I still stand by my previous comments. Willow, with all do respect I would hope the HK sounded better, because if memory serves me correct its about $800 more in price.

Yes, but no one pays MSRP for HK, so the $800 difference is probably more like a couple hundred bucks. If you look at street prices, the 635 I got was only about $100 more than the Pioneer it replaced. . . and smoked to a cripsy charred state of inediblity.

I can't comment on that Andy. I can only comment on the MSRP's I see. Beside's if the industry starts to buy through grey market like it has done in the past with two channel...you might see companies like HK start marketing more HTIB's and lower end receivers.

I definitely will. Originally I had plan to read up here post a bit then disappear, but this community seems really interesting now, and pretty damn active! So I will be sticking around. Unless work and life get too busy haha.

Also, I ended up getting the HK 245 for $350 +30 shipping, no tax, and each M block for $325, so $650 + $70 shipping, no tax.

Just around what my budget was. I really like the idea that, if I don't like the AVR, it was only a $350 investment which I can go and replace easily, and if I do like it, will be an easy upgrade down the road.

I'm real eager to piece this together. More than likely will be next weekend. This rig will be mostly for music, but I do like watching TV and being able to hear it. Love my Samsung DLP, but the speakers on it suck. Haha

I'm a little late, but I went your route with the HK 235. No HDMI, but same features as the newer model. Anyway as a cheap pre/pro it does a great job. The 445 and 645 have better DACs than the entry level HKs, EQ (which can be nice), but I don't know if they really sound better when using separate amps. As you said, it's a nice economical solution and you can always upgrade later.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers

I think HK is doing what they need to stay ahead of the curve. Higher MSRPs make products seem better than lower MSRP products. . . and people like getting or thinking they are getting a deal. It's probably just good marketing on their part to set the bar so high. Also, any company that has a solid presence on ebay, like HK does, knows where the market is heading. By owning the ebay refurbished HKs, HK keeps that revenue in-house and gets to move B, demo, refurb products for a fair price. That lowers their need for warehousing / inventory of those products and allows them to spend that money on R&D, internal components, etc.

Good for everyone, if you ask me. Viva la HK!!!

How would Rjinla benefit from the emotiva? He's looking at the HK245 and 2 monoblocks, so I don't see where this would fit in?

It can be used as a full range amplifier for each of your speakers. If your receiver has pre outputs, replace those wimpy internal amps with one BPA-1 for each main channel!

Seems like it pretty much is a monoblock to me-150wpc in bridged mode

Actually Andy, what you have mentioned has a ripple effect. It also erodes their dealer base and soon they can only sell their products via Ebay. This has already happened in Canada as Harman Kardon isn't sold at any high end shops and instead is sold online or through mid-fi big box stores.

Regardless, the thread has been derailed enough, enjoy your HK I'm sure it sounds great.

go get a yammie rxv2600 (you can get them alot cheaper now than what i paid for mine) and one adcom gfa555 and you will never look back. yamaha doesn't sound bright to me, and dollar per features you can't go wrong. stay away from the htr series. me and 3 other people i know have had bad experiences with them. they say there built the same as the rxv line, but i strongly disagree
    Yamaha RX-V2600
    Adcom GFA555 x 2 :D

    Yamaha Dvd c950 dvd changer
    Polk RTi12 mains
    Polk CSi3 center
    Polk psw303
Polk RTi6 (surround and surround back)
Acoustic Research 12in 200 watt sub(8 years old and still hits hard:D)
    WindyWillys cooling fan (works great)
    Mitsubishi 52in big screen
    blue jeans cables

ledhed, if you're talkiing to me, I did look. Don't need a mult-channel amp at the moment. I'm running my fronts with a 2 channel Carver and my center with a bridged mono amp with 200@8. When I upgrade all round, I might consider a 5 or 7 channel amp, but it's just not a wise investment now. I'm pretty happy.

Which is where I bought my 335 for 700$ and as an FYI I bought my rxv540 for 600$ when it first came out. It's not that the 540 was a bad reciever just didn't cut it for me it's now powering my r15s in the bedroom. I don't care who sells what, I care for a good/great product for the best price. Here's the thing around my place, either you go to a box store where they don't know ****, or go to a highend store where they think they are the ****... it's 6 of one half a dozen of the other. So I go where I can get the best price. I don't care about CS as I walk in buy and leave. I do my research on my own.

    Just an update.

Got everything in. Hoping to hook things up this weekend.

I'm sure I'll run into snags, but hope I'm prepared, plus I know you guys are here as well. ;)

I didn't buy any good interconnects yet, I am going to hook it up temporary with cheap cable to figure out placement and exact lengths of cables I need before I go ordering the good stuff ;)
