Is it worth getting an upconverting dvd player if you don't have a fancy new TV but plan on getting one when the old one peters out? Will it make a big difference audio and video wise when you have an 11 year old Sony projection and an HK AVR125? Will the Cubs ever win the World Series? Is there any suggestions under $150?

As always, I thank you for your support.

If your projector is 11 years old it wont be able to accept the up converted signal, so no it would not be worth it. As for when your tv will kick the bucket, is it on its way out, or still going strong? All ours have gone slowly, shown symptoms and finally been deemed unusable usually two years after. TVs are like computers, things are changing so rapidly you buy something new and by next year theres already something much better out.

As for a recommend under $150, depends if used is considered. If used I would look at Audiogon, can see some good deals from time to time. I would look at Pioneer Elite, Denon, and Panasonic. Can't remember the model of the Panny, around 3-4 years old, supposed to be one of the best interlaced pictures out there, sold for right around $200.

The Panny rp-91 was once regarded as having the best (or at least really excellent) 480i video output. The later Panny models - rp82, rp72, xp30, xp50 - were revered for their 480p output. The rp91 was produced around '01, and the rest from around '02-'03, IIRC. The rp91 is probably now the cheapest of the bunch in the used market since few people care about 480i anymore.

My opinion of the rp91 - it's a hidden gem. Its video is better than my Denon 2910's 480i via component, though the Denon is superior via HDMI and 480p. I know this won't be easily swallowed, but I also prefer the rp91 over the 2910 on redbook CD playback (which itself was comparable to the Bel Canto DAC2).

    Mulveling,

The rp-91, that sounds familiar. My manager at Circuit City used to use one to his Infocus with a I-scan in between, he used to say I got ripped off buying my Pioneer Elite 47-Ai because he got both his units used and paid around half what I paid, but got a much better picture. His father also used one with a Hitachi Projection, I believe it was a S500. Now that I think about it he also said sound quality for CDs/DVD would be a toss up, the only thing I had that bested him was DVD-A and SACD playback. Thanks.
