I just came from BB and I bought a couple HD movies and I noticed on the case it says 480i and the feature is 1080p. My TV is 720p and 1080i,does this mean my picture will be in 480i?And if so is this low res?Or does my TV upscale this to it's highest?Forgive me if I sound noobish, but I am.

I have a 720p native display and I run my PS3 at 1080i resolution because my TV has a strong deinterlacer. Blu-ray will run at 480p/1080i/1080p.

Sorry,I should have elaborated here. The question was mainly for the HD DVD for the 360.On the HD DVD movie case it says the main feature is in 1080p,my TV is formatted for 720p or 1080i.Does this mean I will see it in those resolutions or will it drop to 480i?

It will drop to 720p. (the native format of your TV.)

It will still look better than standard DVD at 480p.

For standard DVD it takes 480(p or i) and tries to guess at the info that is missing and "upconverts" it to 720p.

For HD-DVD it takes 1080 lines of information and downconverts it to 720p.

Think of it like a digital picture. Does it look better to take a thumbnail picture and blow it up to 1024x768 on your monitor or take a huge 6-10megapixal picture and shrink it to 1024x768?

Eventually most of the new sets will support 1080p and there will be no conversion neccesary (up or down), but for now - you are still getting quite a bit of benefit from HD-DVD.

PLORD, sounds like you've got a 'dual-disc'. it has both the standard definition version as well as the high def version. that way you can still watch the dvd on an older dvd player.

I think the special features are in 480i and the main is in 1080p,that's what it says anyway.I'm watching the worst movie I've ever seen right now,Serenity. What a waste of 25 bucks.LOL!

Actually I thought it was pretty good, but you have to be a fan of the TV show FireFly.

Basically FireFly was a show that lasted about 1 season. It's DVD's sold so well, they released a movie (Serenity) to complete many of the story lines from the TV show. If you don't like it - I am sure you will find people here at club polk to take it off your hands. (I would, but I don't have an HD-DVD player :( )

It's awful. It seems like everything is just a beat off from the action, to the editing, even the acting. Just an all around a bad movie.

    PL,

Stick around. Being new is where we all were at some point. Just need an interest in the hobby is all. And it sounds like you're really enjoying yourself so far. The only risk in sticking it out on this board is to your bank account. :D.

I mainly bought on impulse and reviews.I didn't go demo tons of stuff mainly because I can't afford new store prices on all my gear,I only bought the TV brand new at CC.Ebay has been my best friend and I've scored pretty nice there, some of the gear I see you guys have is really high dollar, maybe when I win the lottery I can afford a $100,000 system and believe me I would buy big if that happened.I know every time I look at a pair of B&W Nautilus I get weak in the knees! You guys are right, once the bug bites there's really no stopping it and there are endless possibilities, just when you think you've found nirvana in your system you hear something better.

You have to be patient. I don't have a lot of my funds directed towards buying Home Theater stuff, so it's taking me a long time to get where I want to be. My audio nirvana is not far off from where I am right now. It's all about slowly buying the pieces of the puzzle.

Man, when I started here I had an Polk RM system....went from there to the RTI, and now LSi. Added a 5 channel amp as well.

agreed. it takes time and its ok to be wherever you are now. its all about your enjoyment not keeping up with anyone else. when i first got into audio probally 4-5 years ago now i had bought a cheap sony reciever from a neighbor for $35.00 and had a borrowed pair of bose 401s to listen to it on. now i have over 20k in audio gear and wanting more :D REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D
