    Heh, such a general question just doesn't have a good answer.

    * What's your budget?
    * How much importance do you place upon: audio quality, video quality, convenience? You a causal audiophile, hardcore, or not at all?
    * What's your complete list of associated equipment? (audio & video systems)
    * Are you willing to buy used?

    By answering the above questions accurately, you give us internet denizens at least an outside shot of answering your inquiry in an intelligent manner!

    For my needs, a good used Denon from audiogon hits the spot - 2910, 2900 (no hdmi though), 3910 - many good models!
    Tannoy Dimension TD10, SOTA Star Sapphire, Heathkit W4A's, McIntosh MC2100, Eddie-Current Zana Deux, Singlepower SDS, Sennheiser HD650, Audio-Technica L3000, Sony Qualia 010

    I would look for used Pioneer Elite models as well (59avi - HDMI, 46avi - very compact w/HDMI, etc.).

    Many will probably tell you Oppo. Haven't seen one, couldn't say.

    I also have a Samsung HD-850 which you can find on the cheap these days, like $75. It does the job and has 1080i upconversion, HDMI, comp, coaxial/optical.
    Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand
    Bedroom: Samsung HPR-4252, Toshiba HD-A2, HK 3480, Signal Cable, AQ speaker cable, Totem Dreamcatchers, SVS PB10-NSD, URC MX-850

    Which model? I would assume "bang-for-the-buck" DVD player would be under $100 at least.

    For what I expected of it the Oppo DV 970 is a good buy. $150 plus they give you a free HDMI cable or if you want a longer cable like 36 feet they charge you like $25.

    This is a good starter player. I expect that I would, in the future, just use it for video.

    well i guess it boils down to how many bucks you want to spend, and what your prioritys are. video? audio? resale value? etc. if you want very good video and you have 250.00 or less to spend in my humble oppinion go for an oppo. it also has decent sacd and dvda abilitys. if you want good audio and video and want a nice looking player go with a denon or sony. they both have very nice players that do both well. the oppos for the most part look cheesy compared to a nice denon but they perform very well. look at several models after you figure out a budget then decide. like hearing impared i also own an oppo 970HD and am very happy with it. Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D
