Hello, its my first post and i've been following threads and posts on this forum and love it! especially since its polk!

I would like to find out if the Polk Rti4's are unmatched in bass output of its kind and class price. i currently own a pair and my friend who is interested in new speakers are looking at the Rti4's because of my recommendation. i'd be glad to tell him that no other bookshelf speaker of its type and price class can match its bass output because the grand total of his spending would be about 300-500 dollars. a pair of bookshelf speakers and a mid level stereo receiver.

So are the Rti4's as good as it gets in the types with 5.25 inch woofers and as small as the rti4's?

Meh, praise them all you want. If he agrees and says they sound great then those are the speakers for him.

Is it the best small bookshelf with a 5.25" driver? NO. There are quite a few I would consider much better. Some slightly more expensive and some a lot more expensive. For the price it is not a bad choice, but don't get carried thinking it is THE BEST speaker of its size and configuration.

Can you think of any that sound better for less?

For the $190 plus shipping you can snag a pair on eBay for, I'm not sure what other speaker in that price range would have more bass? Let me rephrase that, more good sound quality bass!

I heard some Mordaunt Short 902s this weekend that were pretty damn impressive run on a Marantz integrated for ~ $200. The Rocket XLS bookshelves are supposed to be very comparable to GR AV1s for ~ $200.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers

Depending on who you ask the following are worthy contenders in the LESS THAN the price of the RTi4. Epos ELS-3, Paradigm Atom, NTH Classsic Absoulute Zero or the PSB Alpha B1. The list of more expensive is longer. The RTi4 is a very good small, reasonably priced bookshelf. Calling it THE BEST is a matter of opinion.

I forgot about the ONIX speakers, those would be a contender based on reviews! I have the RTi4's and the EPOS ELS-3's, the ELS-3's have more articulate bass, but don't go as deep and would not be a better choice for HT use. For music, they are pretty amazing! I have also had the Paradigm Atom's inhouse, and again, I think if you are just comparing the bass, the RTi4's would be my choice for HT use.
