OK is it just me or is the PS3 blue ray way sharper than the HD on the xbox.I've been comparing mine and find the pic on my Samsung 42 DLP alot sharper and more detailed with the PS3 than the HD from my xbox. The HD seems softer and grainier from the xbox.Anyone notice the same?

What are you using as your test material? Are you comparing the same movie or different ones?

Thats impossible, the PS3 and Blu-Ray are complete failures. You doing something wrong, perhaps seeing things. Your entire livelihood is tied up in Sony stock. Nobody owns a PS3 thier just sitting on the shelves. ;)

    Power,

The 360 can be hooked up by component or vga (analog computer interface). There is no digital connection like dvi or hdmi. I've read reports that vga colors don't look as good. I haven't tried it myself.

It sounds like you may be playing regular dvds on the machines if you are swapping king kong back and forth. So yes, aeon flux on blu-ray would definitely look sharper than king kong in regular dvd. I'd try renting something that comes in both formats like superman returns to do a good picture quality demo on both formats.

What I have heard is that the quality of surround sound on the 360 add-on is difficult to get right. Something about the sound balance on the center channel. How's the audio in general between the two?

I'm sorry guys I didn't mean king kong,my kids have been watching it so much I have it on the brain. And yes I find that the audio on the PS3 is much better,it's just too bad that the games aren't as advanced as the 360 yet.I can't seem to pull myself away from GOW or Lost Planet.I watch movies on the PS3 now and play games on the 360.The pic from the 360 is noticeably grainier than the PS3 which is so clear it makes your eyes bleed, and that's the pic I like.I'm now seeing advantages of the PS3 after really taking a harder and longer look.360 games are still head and shoulders above so far though.

DUNNO what you're talking about. even king kong leaves me breathless, as far as clarity, color and sharpness are concerned.

not knocking the ps3, just sticking up for the 360. i would like to own a ps3 in the future. maybe.

Seems like I made the right decision, then. Get both. Enjoy the games on the 360 while I'm waiting on the ps3 games to catch up. And enjoy the blu-ray goodness on the cheap.

Here's the list of new releases this year so far:

    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=766588

Red is HD-DVD only. Blue is Blu-ray only. Looks like the ps3 will play almost everything coming out through summer so far. Should be a good year for my HT!

FYI Gears of War and Resistance Fall of Man had the same development cycle, Xbox 360 and PS3 Development kits shiped to the software companies within a month or two of eachother.

Same development time and the 360 games still look better, only exception that i know of is that Oblivion on the PS3 has an improved draw difference because Bethesda kept tweaking after the release on the 360. official quote from a bethesda rep said that the 360 was more than capable of handling the improvements, and they came solely from increased development time.

And the main reason you're seeing a difference between your bluray and HD DVD pictures is going to be the cables carying the signal. HDMI is a vast improvement over Component video, were the 360 using a HDMI connection the difference would be greatly reduced. Hopefully they'll make that option available soon...

When they do offer HDMI the current owners will have to buy a new system.

maybe not, it's likely there's a way to adapt the current output with a software patch to enable an HDMI connection from it... i kinda doubt they'd screw all of us who already have one, their customer service has always seemed better than that to me (like how they upgraded all the warranties to 1yr and refunded all service charges that had been made!!)

The problem is the current generation of Xbox 360s only allows for an analog video output since it runs through a DAC before hitting the port.

That is the rumored revision allowing digital output.

it's always possible they'll offer a free upgrade, i'm sure if they're adding HDMI they're doing it in a way that can simply be added on to systems currently in warehouse... no company is going to re-design and change the manufacturing process for a simple port add-on...

guess we won't know till it happens, if it happens lol

and while there is definately a noticable difference between signals from HDMI and component cables, they still both put out a damn pretty picture :D

Well they are talking about making the new version of 360 IPTV capable so there will be some slight differences in the hardware most likely but as it stands now the easiest way for them would be to have a different RTM then replacing the mainboard in millions of systems. Only time will tell.

Lol, the 360 was never designed to be an hd-dvd player, it's as simple as that. It's a serious hardware limitation that no dongle or software patch can overcome in current models. The ps3 has those capabilities 'cause it was designed from the ground up to be a blu-ray player and output 1080p over hdmi 1.3.

If you don't know the specifics, hdmi isn't just a way of passing a digital signal, it is a way to pass a digital signal so it can't be intercepted and copied at any point in the source-decoder-hdtv output chain. The 360 will need a major hardware upgrade to use it. That's why we haven't seen anything but the somewhat hobbled add-on player they currently have. I'm not knocking the video playback as I haven't seen it over component and many people say it's still pretty good. However, you will never get a simple hdmi add-on to current 360 boxes. From reports on this board, they couldn't even get the audio right with the hd-dvd with lipsynch and audio surround level problems.

Not everything can be fixed with the magic firmware bullet...;)

yes, i concur. with everything you state. they will have to create a new xbox altogether, hence....the rumored 'zephyr'. may become reality soon.

damned audio issues. aside from them, i must state for the record that the hd dvd addon's high def picture via component is superior to high def cable via dvi to my tv. not that hd cable is any sort of benchmark, but i'd say it's pretty damn good.

can't vouch for much of that, I have yet to bother with hi-def dvd sources. I'll worry more once I upgrade my TV, but with union contract negotiations coming up in may I'm saving all the extra money i get incase we need to strike... Kinda waiting to pick up on a format till there's a good sign of which will become the standard... wouldn't have wanted to buy a betamax player only to have no new movies a year later right?

man, in my opinion, both camps keep taking the lead. back and forth like a ping-pong match. studio support for blu ray really is taking notice. with hd dvd, i'm sick of the same 'ole boring **** releases. it's not the medium, it's the software titles. i love all other aspects of hd dvd. hardware is currently flawed, but hardware for blu ray has issues as well. CONTENT to me is critical in battling during war. blu ray is starting to pick up momentum. still not going to see any clear winner for awhile. and both may even stick around forever. have i mentioned i HATE this friggin' format war?!

Yep, this war will be decided by content. Here's the latest update on that front:

    http://www.eproductwars.com/dvd/

Casino Royale won't be out for like two months, but it's already at #29 in DVD sales rankings. Not bad for an hd release in either format, but it shows the current strength of blu-ray. Sony's taking that title to the bank. Should make up for some of the subsidizing on the ps3.

And same title releases give a good comparison to the better current sales power of blu-ray.

    Departed

    Blu-ray #46 HD-DVD #73

    Babel

    Blu-ray #340 HD-DVD #541

And here are the latest numbers from another DVD seller:

    http://www.dvdempire.com/Content/Features/hidef_wars.asp?view=1&userid=99365301400678

HD-DVD hasn't been over 50% since the week of December 12th. And the steady climb in sales has blu-ray at a 2 to 1 advantage in sales.

Wow, I didn't expect things to turn around for blu-ray so quickly. I suppose you can still wait, say it's too early to tell and all that. But the next few months will be a bloodbath for HD-DVD if the anemic release schedule continues. It certainly doesn't look like a ping pong match anymore. More like water starting to fall over a dam...;)
