Monitor 10's

Hi! Anyone out there still using Polks ~fabulous (Monitor Ten's) ? I'm one of the first original owners of this speaker, from when it first came out. In fact, I went & bought (two) more of them to criss~cross my living room. I have them hanging on a 30 degree tilt, out of my ceiling, from Piano wire. It's like having a pair of head phones on, with-out the feeling on your head. Hmmm !!!!
They came out in the summer of 1972, & now that there "35" years old +. My Serial number is #0000010.....
(Question): Does anyone have, or know anyone, that has those one inch dome tweeters, that where installed in the Monitor 10's ? or does anyone know of a fit, that will be compatable to what was once there ? I've blown one of mine out, "after all these years". I still think these Monitor 10's sound as good, as what's out there today for the money i paid...
If anyone wants to add to this conversation, Let me know in an E-mail to me...
Thanks, The Chops ~ lash5@zoominternet.net

Welcome to the Club Polk forum! I think if you check eBay you will find a couple of the original Peerless tweeters for the Monitor 10 for sale. This is assuming you have the older style speakers, with the black dome and diagonal lines running to it.DKG999

Make sure it is not the fuse before you buy a new tweeter.

Welcome to the Club Polk Forums Chops. There are a lot of members of your vintage around here (like me). Glad to have you join us. Ditto that advice on the fuses. Clean the fuse contacts also while checking them. I found some nice Peerless tweeter on eBay for about $35 a pair. Polk has replacements I think, but they are not the original Peerless. They cost about $48 each and you should replace both.
Welcome and good luck!Carl -
Hey! Thank you guys... That was pretty quick & I'll be checking out the E-Bay action. I'll let you know how this pans out...

JTGRANBY,
I owe you a beer. I just checked the fuse in the back & it's blown.... Hmmm !!!
You know, after all these years (35), that I've had these speakers, I've never had a fuse blown out. That fuse is as old as the speakers themselves... Whew !!!!
You just saved me some money... what kinda beer do ya like ?? l.o.l.
Now! I'm not up on fuses for this Monitor "10" speaker, so where do I get another one ? or is this a hardware store / Radio Shack item????

i was given a gift of a pair of speakers today...they still have the registration tag on them...
model 10? the ten was handwritten. serial numbers 50678, and 50679.
where can i learn more about them? i want to build a stereo around them.
I have no idea how old they are. can anyone help me?
they did not come with any wire, so i have not hooked them up to anything yet. they have two fuses on the back, and what looks like a woofer, with two smaller woofers above it, with a small dome tweeter on top. heavy.
thanks. -
i was given some fuses with the speakers. i have not even checked the amperage yet.

Hey guys!
I replaced the fuses with some (Slow-Blow) 1 amp ~250 watt fuses, in the back of the Monitor "10"-'s, & I'm not sure if they are playing as well as they should?
Does anyone know of a tester of sorts, to test these tweeters to see if they are up to par ?? My hearing must really suck !!! because they sound sort of operational but faint.. Hmmm !!!!
Or did I use the wrong fuses to make it sound that way ???
Thanks....

Use a wire and some alligator clips and jump the fuse terminals. You probably won't hear andy difference, but give it a try. Usually a fuse either works or it don't. I suspect bad tweeter of crossover component.Carl

Mine aren't the original 10's but I have 10B's and I love them. Every time I see someone mention the 10's, I have to say something. Simply an amazing speaker and plays whatever I listen to very well.
Glad to hear it was only a fuse...how cool was that! Welcome to the Forum!Richard? Who's your favorite Little Rascal? Alfalfa? Or is it........................Spanky?.................................Sinner. -
I'll give that a try, Thanks

Monitor 10's.... any of them.... are fabulous vintage speakers.
They do everything very well and at a very modest price.
There is nothing wrong with upgrading the tweeters. The new ones from Polk are substantially better than the originals - IMO.
Enjoy them for a lifetime. I know I will.
The Monitor 10's compare very favorably to the CRS+. The Monitor 7 isn't nearly as powerful speaker. -
If I am not mistaken, a slow blow fuse should not be used. You want the fuse to blow before the tweeter.

10B's here. I bought them new in 85 ( I just found the origional manuals and receipt). Every time I think about replacing them, I end up replacing something else that makes them sound better again.
But I'm beginning to hear some faint whisperings in my ear. And the whispers sound like they're saying SDA's.:rolleyes:My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself. -
I heard that same "whisper" from my 10's. They have since been replaced by sda 1C's in the HT setup and SDA CRS+'s in two channel. Still have the 10's though!
-
I have a set of a's & b's & they sound great, never found anything that can really replace these, great highs & lows, IMO...

Chops - How about a picture of the MON 10 setup you have?? Sounds interesting.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Chops, Check your PM's
Polkstersince85 is right on the money. Stay away from the slow blow fuses or the tweeter could fry before the fuse. The right fuse is a lot cheaper than a new tweeter.
I have had a set of 10B's since '85 as well. Very nice speakers and they have always sounded real good. Can't see any reason to part with them......

Polk SDA 1C's with upgraded xovers -
Hello , I a have a pair of 10's that I bought new in 1978. They
are still in every day use. In 1978 when I bought these, a friend of mine had the powered baby Advents ( $1100.pr ) , after hearing my 10's , he went to the dealer I bought them from and traded his Advents in on the Monitor 10's.
My serial numbers are 64072 and 64073. I have thought about upgrading to the newer tweeter, but not sure what benefits I would see.
Nice Forum , Stephen -
Welcome to club Polk
I have some old tweeters in some of my speakers, and they are starting to sound scratchy. Many members here have gone with the Silk RDO upgrade. It is a simple drop in replacement that should give excellent results. Also I would consider upgrading the crossover with new capacitors.
BenPlease. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks
Ben
