The Chaos at Work

Well, so far I absolutely love my new IT job for Procter & Gamble. However, I guess this is a wake up to the real world and those on salary, lately I have been putting in early mornings and late nights in order to get work done. No big deal.

Well today, my boss recognized that I had been doing this all week and told me I could go home at around 1230-1.

However, about 45 minutes ago we had an employees lotus notes ID files go corrupt from the server in Cincy, OH. After speaking with them over there it is going to take a minimum of 4 hours to recreate his new ID.

Looks like I'm stuck here till 3-4 today.... *sigh*

I guess welcome to the real world, eh?

Sorry for the vent, but this forum keeps me sane during the day when work gets insane.

Salary comes with it's perks, at least it does here. My employees can pretty much come and go as they please, and nobody abuses it.

Leaving early tends to get derailed a lot - hopefully you enjoy what you do and it sounds like you have a decent manager. Wait until the best time to do something is midnight to 3 am in order to not disrupt most of the users... ;)

Lotus Notes...I just puked all over my keyboard!

My last job we used Lotus Notes and I absolutely hated it along with every employee in the company. We switched over to Exchange Server and Outlook about 4 months before I left. All was fine and everyone was happy!

Sorry you didn't get to leave early. Those are the breaks in the IT world.

I'm with you StrongBad. We use Notes FOUR POINT FIVE at my work. It's ABSURDLY out of date. It doesn't even understand HTML. Infuriating. I use it only when absolutely necessary, which luckily for me isn't that often. I don't know how the managers deal with it, sending emails all day.

They wouldn't "stick" with Outlook in my case because Outlook wasn't INVENTED when they started using Notes. Or at the very least it wasn't anything close to an industry standard. I'm pretty sure the base version of Notes we're using is from 1996 or so, with patches from up to 2000. Outlook started becoming popular in '98 or '99.

The reason they won't switch, aside from the hassle and just regular old inertia, is one of my crazy bosses fear of viruses associated with Outlook.

Luckily this afternoon after I had posted this my manager came back and said "f&*^ it, go home, he can wait till monday for his email to be fix." So in my leaving happy I decided to go have my battle you all have been hearing about with comcast.

I will update that thread soon, but I must say, the comcast issue is OVER.

My first boss at my old company thought this way. She was the ONLY one that liked Lotus Notes. She left and the new boss convinced the big wigs to migrate over to Exchange\Outlook.

Ya gotta make sure you have a nice Mail Firewall and Spam Box to catch the nasties that nerds are sitting around creating all the time.

It's not that Exchange\Outlook is more succeptable to viruses than Lotus. It's that most of the corporate world uses Exchange\Outlook, so why would a nerd sit there and create a virus for something that hardly any company uses. Their whole intent in creating that virus is to affect the most people and companies as possible. Same thing for Windows. Why would a nerd waste his time creating something for Unix.

Have a drink for me bud! Enjoy the early weekend!

I don't want to hear any of this. This is my first night in a month that I'm not working a double. 103 hours last week and 96 this week. They are trying to get me for this weekend but I'm standing my ground. The next two however I will be working. I worked out a deal so I do get paid (in addition to my salary) for the extra hours since what I'm donig at night is no longer in my job discripition.

    Sounds familar.
Good news is by some quirk I was pulled off salary exempt(No ot)
a couple of years ago. I was working all weekend every weekend.
I still work a lot extra, but the money is there. Thank you salary, non-exempt:D
Still, either way, I don't mind woking the hours if its productive.
Even better when your boss knows you're going above and beyond.
