Hearing Voices

looking for a bit of help from some of you experts on a wierd situation. Not sure where to post this but it's a sub issue so I'll try here. I recently moved to an area where there is alot of commercial traffic close to the house and now my Polk sub has started acting like a tuner and picking up CB chatter which it brodcasts during playback of my discs adding snippets of conversations that weren't part of the scipt. Anyone heard of this happening before? Is this a normal occurance or is something wrong with my sub? Any suggestions to shield the sub or somehow stop this? Thanks guys.

That's odd. Try messing with the X-over on your sub. See if you can "tune" them out. If you can, your sub connections (whether from a speaker or sub input) are picking it up and you'll need better shielded cables. If you can't tune it out, it's likely something in the amp itself and you should contact polk support.

it's most definatley 'white noise'!!!!! be afraid, be very afraid!:(

actually, you're getting sounds from your sub? isn't your sub crossed over at the sub itself? if so, it is indeed spirits from 'the other side'. somehow you must be getting inteference somewhere up along the signal chain. your receiver most decidedly. imho.

Thanks! I'll try the x-over adjustments first since that's free but I think your other suggestion makes more sense to me. I do have a pretty cheesy cable in use that may well be acting as an antenna. I knew when I used it that I would eventually have to replace it but it was the only one I had on hand that was long enough. Thanks again, I do believe you're on to something!

Are there any classic CB "white trash" hobbyists close by?
Look for the BIG antennas. Just one of these guys with
a hacked big power linear(very illegal) will bleed over into everything.
Other than that, better cables, different positioning should help with the problem.

Besides better cables, I would suggest using a good line conditioner/power center for your system if you don't already. That will help clean up any ambient noise that may be coming through your line. I'm a big fan of Panamax, and after many side-by-side comparisons (I used to work in an electronics store), I have every confidence in saying that Panamax units are far better than Monster units. They clean the power more, yield better results from your equipment, and have better protection. Honestly, I wouldn't spend less that $500.00 on a line conditioner, but I've seen what a $1000 unit can do so I'm a little biased. They do make ones that are only $200 or so. Happy problem solving.

I hear voices over my sub too. They tell me to go out and buy more audio gear. Maybe a marketing strategy on the part of speaker manufacturers? Or perhaps I just need to adjust my medication dosage.

Yes Yes I hear those same voices too!
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Voices? I hear voices, music, news.....in the telephone, in the computer. Luckily it does not affect my HT/2 Channel (Unless I put my finger one inch away from the pre tubes; if I do, I don't need a source. Music will come out of the speakers...). We fixed the phone issue with a filter in the line; only the extension in the basement has the issue now.

HUGE antenna about 500 ft from the house.

my older PSW 350 subwoofer on occasion would also pick up CB radio chatter sometimes. so i sold it. never had any other sub do that since.

You may have a faulty cable running to the sub. The shielding may be damaged or broken inside the cable. That can cause that problem.

    Couple of things:
    1. Standards for passing EMI/EMC certification have changed over the years. If its an older sub, its more likely that it would be able to pick up stray interference and play it over the sub. Early versions of the RT3000 sub were able to pick up an AM station in Baltimore fairly well from what I've heard.

    2. The low pass filter might be too high. Knock it down to filter out that stuff.

Wonder what power rating those big tubes got. Take hell of a big box to cover them bad boys up might even have to make a bigger shelf for that amplifier.
