Differences between...

Okay, not sure if I'm posting this in the right section but this seems as good as a place as any. Here is my question. With all the new HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players coming out, with the exception of one unit, the Panasonic Blu-Ray, all the units are only coming with 5.1 analog outs. What is the difference of using fiber optic out over 5.1 analog connections. What is so special about Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD lossless (2-ch.) and DTS-HD lossless. Is there that much of a difference in these formats as compaired to plain old Dolby Digital and DTS.
The reason I ask is just like many others on the forum I'm running a full 7.1 setup so if I wanted to run the 5.1 analog outputs so I could take advantage of these new audio formats by letting the player decode the audio, I wouldn't get the full 7.1 without using a y-splitter to complete the circle. If I go with the fiber optic route, my pre/pro can then do the decoding and then I would get the benefit of the 7.1 setup.
To make a long story short, would you gain that much more detail in the soundtrack by letting the player do the 5.1 decoding of the new audio formats or would you really notice a difference by using the fiber optic connection instead. Does anyone know if the second release of players will be adding 7.1 analogs outputs. Sorry to drag this out but I'm just a little confused about the whole situation. I was just under the impression when these new players were announced they were going to be able to do discrete 7.1 channel soundtracks but seems the only way you can really do this as of know is using 1.3 HDMI. I'm not even sure if the disk themselves are recorded with the 7.1 sountracks.
