I know that part of meat-packing houses is called a killing floor.. pretty self explanatory, that one. I've seen it used in other places that was some sort of spin on that.. I think a scifi novel mentions the killing floor (where, essentially, someone is systematically killed, don't know if it is fight to the death or what). There is a band named Killing Floor, named after the reference to that book. There is also a 'new' book out called Killing Floor, a thriller, but I haven't read it.

My guess is that all references go back to the meat packing usage, which I think has been around a LONG time.

Song title "Killing Floor" Howlin Wolf

Song title "Killing Floor" Jimi Hendrix (Originally by Howlin' Wolf)

Led Zeppelin's second album The Lemmon Song:
I should have quit you, long time ago. [X2]
I wouldn't be here, my children, down on this killin' floor.

On the O Brother where art thou soundtrack has a Chris Thomas King song - "Hard Time Killing Floor Blues"

The Guess Who - "No Time"
No time for a gentle rain
No time for my watch and chain
    No time for revolving doors
No time for the killing floor
No time for the killing floor
There’s no time left for you
    No time left for you.

These popped up on the search, but none are the ones I were looking for, there are more songs played everyday that refer to the killing floor.

The meatpacking reference has been around over a hundred years.

    In addition...

There is a band named Killing Floor, named after a reference in the book Johnny Pneumonic.

There was a song Killing Floor by Jimi Hendrix:

    From the album "Radio One"

    I SHOULD OF QUIT YOU
    A LONG TIME AGO
I SHOULD OF QUIT YOU BABY
    A LONG TIME AGO
BUT YOU GOT ME MESSIN' ROUND WITH YOU BABY
YOU GOT ME CRIN' ON A KILLIN' FLOOR, YEAH
    IF I DON'T FALLOW, YEAH
    MY FIRST MIND
IF I DON'T FALLOW PRETTY BABY
    MY FIRST MIND
I WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE SINCE MY SECOND TIME
    YEAH

    LORD KNOWS, RIGHT NOW
    I SHOULD'VE BEEN GONE
LORD KNOWS, I SHOULD'VE BEEN GONE
YOU GOT ME MESSSIN' ROUND WITH YOU BABY
YOU GOT ME CRIN' ON A KILLIN' FLOOR
    YEAH, THATS ALL

OOH, YOU GOT ME CRIN' BABY
    OHH, YOU GOT ME CRIN'

There is also a reference to killing floor in the following song by Naked Aggression:

    From the album "Bitter Youth"

There's this group around that calls themselves prolife
Well, instead they should call themselves pro-death
Because by taking away our freedom of choice
They're are going to force many women,
who don't want to bear children, to the back alley
And many women are going to die from these back alley abortions!
But these people don't seem to care...
Operation rescue, what do you want me to do?
SHOVE A COAT HANGAR UP MY ****?

I had an abortion is a back alley
I had an abortion in a back alley
I had an abortion in a back alley
I had an abortion in a back alley
And now I'm bleeding to death on the killing floor

    Artist: Chris Thomas King
Album: O Brother, Where Art Thou? Soundtrack

    Buy this CD

    Hard Time Killing Floor Blues
    Chris Thomas King
    (O Brother, Where Art Thou?)

Hard time here and everywhere you go
Times is harder than ever been before

And the people are driftin' from door to door
Can't find no heaven, I don't care where they go

Hear me tell you people, just before I go
These hard times will kill you just dry long so

Well, you hear me singin' my lonesome song
These hard times can last us so very long

If I ever get off this killin' floor
I'll never get down this low no more
No-no, no-no, I'll never get down this low no more

And you say you had money, you better be sure
'Cause these hard times will drive you from door to door

Sing this song and I ain't gonna sing no more
Sing this song and I ain't gonna sing no more
These hard times will drive you from door to door

    Led Zeppelin
    The Lemon Song

I should have quit you, long time ago. [X2]
I wouldn't be here, my children, down on this killin' floor.

I should have listened, baby, to my second mind [X2]
Everytime I go away and leave you, darling, you send me the blues way down the line.

Said, people worry I can't keep you satisfied.
Let me tell you baby, you ain't nothin but a two-bit, no-good jive.

Went to sleep last night, worked as hard as I can,
Bring home my money, you take my money, give it to another man.
I should have quit you, baby, such a long time ago.
I wouldn't be here with all my troubles, down on this killing floor.

Squeeze me baby, till the juice runs down my leg. [X2]
The way you squeeze my lemon, I'm gonna fall right out of bed.

I'm gonna leave my children down on this killing floor.

    No Time
    (Bachman-Cummings)

    No time left for you
On my way to better things
    No time left for you
    I’ll find myself some wings
    No time left for you
    Distant roads are calling me
    No time left for you.

No time for a summer friend
No time for the love you send
Seasons change and so did I
    You need not wonder why
    You need not wonder why
There’s no time left for you
    No time left for you.

    No time left for you
On my way to better things
    No time left for you
    I’ll find myself some wings
    No time left for you
    Distant roads are calling me
    No time left for you.

No time for a gentle rain
No time for my watch and chain
    No time for revolving doors
No time for the killing floor
No time for the killing floor
There’s no time left for you
    No time left for you.

There were some others... offbeat metal songs about Satan's killing floor, etc.

My take.....it's about being down, trapped, depressed, and feeling so low that you want to die.
