I got the itch . . . again.

I got the itch . . . I'm startnig to get tired of my system's sound. It's always sounded amazing on HT, but I"m looking for a little more in the way of music. In particular, I think I need a little more power with some good processing. I heard a Denon Receiver at CC and almost died! The Monitor 70s sounded amazing on the ordinary entry level Denon. Granted, my RTi8s with my parasound amp would floor the 70s, but the experience made me reconsider my Yamaha. I'm looking for a warmer sound with some decreased brightness. The Parasound helped this considerably when I first hooked it up, but it is still being fed by the typically bright Yamaha.
Can anyone recommend a Denon, HK, Pioneer Elite or other receiver that would fit well in my system. I'm looking to add FXi3's soon, so I would expect the reciever to power Rti6, Csi5, and Fxi3s.
Thx

In my experience, Harman Kardon is on the opposite end of the spectrum of the Yamaha in terms of brightness vs. warmth.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I love my HK 635.
I may be looking to take the next step myself. I have amps a plenty and moving to separates would seem like a logical move given my inventory of power.
If I get a pre/pro, I'll PM you about my 635. It's a wonderful AVR.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand
Bedroom: Samsung HPR-4252, Toshiba HD-A2, HK 3480, Signal Cable, AQ speaker cable, Totem Dreamcatchers, SVS PB10-NSD, URC MX-850 -
Another option would be to get a dedicated stereo preamp with HT passthrough. Keep the Yamaha for HT, use the dedicated preamp for music. . . or at least that's the theory.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

That's interesting. I've heard the quality of HK amps has decreased during some kind of company transition or reorganizing. Is there any truth to this?

I keep hesitating on the idea of going to separate amps. What kind of power would I need to run the Rti6, Fxi5 and Csi5? Would the Outlaw 7075 be enough power or would I be better with the 7125? any other amp recs? My only concern is that it gets real expensive fast.

I was about to resond with this and Andy beat me to it... so +1 and all that kadda wadda cadda.
You could always try out Music Fidelity's Tube Buffer from Music Direct (using it between the receiver and amp)... I believe there is a 30-day trial period.I never had it like this where I grew up. I have never heard of anything like that. Let me do some internet searching on the Tube Buffe.

Yeah, buying a muliti-channel amp is either risky or expensive business. Either you get something decently priced for your RTi setup now, but are then having to shell out for a better one once you upgrade your speakers. Or, you spend big bucks on something overkill for Rtis but that will be with you through the next foreseeable upgrade phase.
I would stick with upgrading either the AVR to a warmer one, or get a dedicated two channel preamp with passthrough like Zombie and I both stated.
I think the second is your best option. No need for a new multichannel reciever/amp since you're happy with HT on the yamaha, and your music improves greatly.
A dedicated pre, the Parasound, and the Rti8s would be an admirable 2-channel rig, to say the least.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

They can usually be found used for anywhere between $200-$250.I never had it like this where I grew up. Man you guys rock that's frickin' awesome. I didn't even mention I do all my music listening in stereo, but you read me like a book. I'm real excited about looking into this preamp. Thank you both.

Well... how 'bout we all work at finding you a tube (or at least, warm-sounding) preamp with a HT bypass....I never had it like this where I grew up. Agreed. The music fidelity looks interesting, but be a bit patient and even more options will open up to you.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

Just so we're clear... the Music Fidelity piece is not a preamp.I never had it like this where I grew up. Yes thank you for the clarification. Don't mind my excitement, I just didn't know I had these options. I am honestly walking into uncharted territory in my experience. Trust me, I never buy on impusle. If I had when I started this HT/Stereo mess, I would have purchased some cruddy Bose like everyone in my family was telling me to do. Any thoughts on pre-amp to compliment a tube buffer?

Have you considered Marantz receivers? just as good sounding as the other's mentioned above. I used a Marantz for 6 years in my ht and for music listening with external amps.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

No I haven't considered Marantz, I always assumed they were way out of my price range. But, I have never heard bad things.
-
I"m checking Marantz right now, in addition to the preamp and buffer.

Holy Hell, SR5001 XM Ready Surround Sound Receiver for $749 w/ 1080p HDMI? Maybe I'll buy a new AVR and Pre-amp w/ buffer. Ugh no one said upgrading was cheap. If it wasn't so much fun, I'd be pissed at you all for filling my head with all these ideas.

well now you've got plenty of options to look at. demo some of the receivers if you can find a place or two that carries them local to you.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

If you go with a new receiver, I would try it out in stereo using the Parasound before buying the buffer and/or preamp. Upgrade a little at a time, you might just love the Marantz as a pre and not need to buy anything else. . . well, not for a couple more months anyway.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

Thanks for the tip, I will remember that. This upgrade plan will probably be an adventure of atleast a 3-4 months.
