I currently have a Yamaha HTR-5740 receiver and am deciding on whether to get the rti8's or 10's. Will my receiver be powerful enough for the 2 models? If not what would be a good receiver to get.

What is the AVR rated for?

What will you be using it for?
I like speakers that are bigger than a small refrigerator but smaller than a big refrigerator:D

Your receiver looks to be rated at 85 watts x 6 channels. The amp sections on the Yamahas are typically strong but I think you'll need a bigger receiver or amp to make the RTi8 or RTi10 sing. Something like the Yamaha RX-V2500 which seemed to pack some good power when I heard it at my friend's home.

If you are sticking with the HTR-5740, I think the current Monitor line is a better match.

You can run the 8's off of what you have with no issues. I have a feeling the 10's will also be ok but you would get more out of them with something beefer. I would not but another receiver, but add an amp to the Yamaha. I think that unit has pre-outs.

So I can just buy a seperate average amp rated at around 50 watts or so, and that will add on to the output of my current receiver? I only listen in stereo mode with a sub to music.

An amp will not add to your receiver, but be a substitute of your receiver amp. So a 50 watt amp is just a 50 watt amp, but know that 50 watts in an amp is more like 53 watts. Where a receivers 85 watts could be 35 watts in real life.
