lcd or dlp?

Ok, I couldn't find a thread to give me an idea, so I figured I'd post. I have been looking at getting an HDTV finally, maybe. I am stuck between an LCD and a DLP. Namely the Sony something or another LCD ending with model e2000. The Samsung DLP is the HLS 5087w. One is 1080p, the dlp, the LCD being 720p. I have had sales people really talk down the DLPs to me, to boost up the LCDs, saying you do not have theproblems, such as bubls. However, I have been told this is not true, and both have some that will need to be replaced, just the LCDs tend to last a few more hours than the DLP. Now, I am just curious for everyone's experience/opinions on these technologies, as far as cost benefit, money spent on repleacement bulbs, etc. I have been told with the dlp, or even the lcd, possibly every 1-3 years I will be dropping money for a new bulb. Of course, stores push their warranties, saying they cover the replacement. I am just at a crossroads in my decision here, trying to learn as much as possible, to make as much an informed decision as possible, and experienced feedback is greatly appreciated.. Currently, at a local store, both are placed almost identical, so money is the not a difference currently. I thank you in advance for any help you may offer.

goto avsforums and do some research....
I would look into the dlp as long as the "silk screen effect" does not bother you. This was a big turn off for me and i went with a 1080p LCD, but it was much more expensive. If you like the way the 1080p dlps video look, they are the best bang for the buck. Yea, you will have to replace the bulb every few years, but it shouldn't be too expensive.Speakers: LSi9 x 2, LSic, LSiFX x 2, Velodyne HGS-15

Yeah, The research I have done has spoken very well of the DLP, and well of the LCD. I would be replacing my 7 year old 32" proscan, which actually still looks good. I would never truly know till I get one home and set up, but the Samsung seems to have a more vibrant pic, more color depth, etc, forlack of a better way to try to explain it, but it is just nitpicking, for the demos Ihave seen of the LCD are beautiful as well. Right now, I have my standard sources, such as my ps2, wii, and dvd player and vcr. I would maybe opt for a 360, and an upconverting dvd player in thenot too distant future. Half my tv use is games, the other half dvd's. i follow a few shows, but usually tape them and watch them later.
I guess one of my gripes was people pushing LCD's. saying they do not have the same costs in replacing, but almost everything I have searched for says the opposite. Darn stores these days! lol -
Good luck on your purchase! Just remember to consider getting the set calibrated after your purchase. The factory delivered torch mode from the Sammy does not do it any justice.

Yeah, I have heard getting it professionally done is best, but not sure I will have money left for that lol. I spent 2 hours on the TV i got now when I bought it looking at diff scenes just to get the stuff the way I want it. I am still undecided, and, knowing me, may be for a while. But I am really getting the impression that I will end up spending not too far different on stuff, whichever i bought

right now if you purchase any sony grand wega lcd you get the stand free. I sell both tv's out of my store and I can tell you both floor model dlp's from samsung we've had on our floor have been sent in for repairs. I own a wega kdfe42a10 and love it. never had a problem and the picture is faultless2 CHANNEL

I have also read neither suffer from gaming lag. I have heard that about a lot of tv's, though, so it is hard to say. I mean in regards to the floor models. The sony is the 720p model with the number e2000 in the end. The pic on it, from what I have seen, is good. I mean, I would like either. They seem very similiar, minues the higher contast ratio, and more vibrant pic in the store, etc. And the resolution diff, which would prolly not be a big thing to me, for now, ebing as I am not running out to buy blu-ray or anything yet. They offer too many options to make this easy lol

skrewloose - Here's a tip...
There will always be complaints about every product out there. These examples include someone misinterpreting information they have read from other posts, others who have legitimate issues with their gear or finally others that are simply just a brand Fanboy that will bash other products other than their own.
There are 1000's of folks that are satisfied with their purchases of HT components and never even thought to come to a forum to deliver positive feedback.
Unfortunately, you will sometimes hear more bad, than good on some products especially sensitive areas such as HDTV’s, Speaker Wires, Speakers and HD DVD v/s Blu-ray. It's like listening to cable news. Listen to all arguments or opinions, and be sure to cut out the extremes on both sides of the debate. In the middle, you will usually find your answer.
You can never do enough research. If you want to know more about brands from Sony or the Sammy, simply do a search on the model # in popular forum sites such as AVS, Home Theater Spot, and Brand specific forums such as this one.
As for JimBRICK’s comment, When someone tells you models that they sell have problems without telling you specifically what the problems are followed by what they have is great, treat lack of information posts as an extreme and eliminate it. To me, it’s a complete waste of time. I’m sure I’ll get a reply ripping into me for this response, but it was not intended to offend anyone, it’s simply giving advice from one newbie to the next.

I do try to take negative things with a grain of salt. There are good and bad to everything. Take the x-box 360 and the number of complaints and stories about hardware failure, yet didn't stop it from selling the millions it has(i have yet to get one, though I may break down in the next few months and get one). Some of the forums mentioned, I had never heard of, but def will check them out. When it comes to spending hundreds or more, I can be an obsessive researcher. I spend months doing such before I ever bought my receiver I have now, and am in love with it lol. My biggest thing with posting what I did was just figuring out some feedback on the whole replacing parts, such as bulbs, thing. And the gaming lag. I have been assured by a few places the DLP won't, by gaming sites, haven;t head as much about the particular sony model. I do appreciate all feedback, good and bad. Means people took the time to read what I wrote lol

I have the Sammy 5088 DLP with an xBox 360. I have not had any of the problems that you mentioned with the exception of one game. The game was Forza and it was written for the 1st xBox which can work with the 360 with a downloaded update from xBox live. I bought the 360 for Forza2 back in October..... I'm still waiting for that damn game to get released
During game play, there are sound issues on the primary car as well as some frame rate issues on some tracks. Now for all games written for xBox 360, I have had no such problems.
I have not had the Sammy long enough to experience any bulb issues so I offer no help or information in that area since I have none.
I think the ##88 DLP series from Samsung or the Sony XBR will be a good choice.
Good luck -
Check out this DLP by Samsung. It uses LED's instead of regular bulbs. You won't have to worry about replacing those pretty much ever(okay not ever, but a really long time)

FYI, it has 20,000 hour bulb life which if you average 6 hours of watching a day should last you 9 years or so.

I absolutely love the tv.
One thing DLP's have over LCDs is ZERO DEAD PIXELS.
Where as with some people who get an LCD, stores will not repair if only a few dead pixels appear on the screen.
you can get the 6187 from outpost.com for under 1800 shipped new! with a 1year in home warranty from samsung.

If you need to know the problems were the same both times the lamps were junk and needed to be replaced after 6 months. Funny how both tv's different models years had the same issue. So before you make a blanket statement like that learn your stuff. I sell samsung, toshiba, sony, panasonic and off brands as well and have seenthem all 12 hours a day running. How much experience do you have DAILY with these brands and models? From what I've actually seen not read or heard is that the samsung dlp (HLR5066W)has given us nothing but trouble and (HLS5086W) was even worse.
Skrewloose just to let you know these models are our best sellers and we have not had ONE tech issue yet with them

Only time I ever heard of dead pixels was when the psp came out. lol. I have seen some of the nice sony 1080p TVs, but they are more than I want to spend. Rihgt now, I have found the samsung and the sony I have eyed for 1600 and soem odd change, which is a very good price for each, from what I can tell, especially the samsung.
That stinks about the Forza game. I have yet to pop for a 360, but do enjoy it when I have used it. I also never owned an original x-box. If i did get hi-def, i'd probably spring for the compmonet cables for each of my systems. I have heard it makes a lot of diff. A friend bought a 42" westinghouse lcd, and he said it is night and day diff on the games. I guess since I have never used "my stuff" on an hd, i cannot say, but most say once they do,they cannot dream of going back. -

JimBRICK,
Unless you are coming into this forum with a new user name, you are new to this site as I am compared to members such as RUSSMAN or F1nut. And what makes this site great is the fact that there are many people here with great information and are willing to help out and answer questions.
It appears that you took it a little personal that I made a comment about your thread with no information. Im not surprised and I expected a reply. If you read what I said, I basically gave another newbie some advise to ignore threads with statements\opinions with no backup. Thats it; there was nothing more to it. I dont have TV selling listed on my resume so therefore I am no expert nor can I speak of anything other than my own experience and filtered research that I have done when it comes to TVs. I now rely 100% on one person for video advice and that is Eliab from Avical. Right or wrong, that is the path I have taken and trust his services and judgment.
With that said, before you recommend showroom TVs delivered in torch mode from the factory, you may want to consider what some of these sets actually look like after being professionally calibrated and the sources that feed them before making the decision of which is the best. I realize that is not the focus of retail chains and the average consumers of these sets, but it should be the focus for enthusiasts that come to these forums.
Anyway, thanks for responding what your concerns were with the sammy sets. Thats info that Skrewloose should consider and look into when he makes his decision. By the way, I responded to your questions about the rti10s.
Cheers! -
oh by the way we also set up our tv's in store to the room lighting, so we have no tv's in the store which are using manufacturers settings. My company spent alot of money having dvd's created to maximize the picture on our sets. I've been selling these tv's for 4 years now and have seen every model from all the above companies, I've also seen how they stand up to the test of time. Sales people are the best people to ask (well the ones like me who want you to have the best set not just make a sale) Cause we see these tv's probably more than most manufacturers. Just cause I've not posted in here doesnt mean I'm a newbie. I've been a member here for a long time and have owned alot of polk equipment. I just don't post unless I have something to give2 CHANNEL

if you are looking to spend under 2000, i would go with the sammy 1080p dlp. Also as far as the hd signals go, you can buy a $20 over the air antenna from radio shack (get the one with gain amplificaion) and check out some local hd channels. Make sure the sammy you get has an hd-decoder (im pretty sure all the new models do). just my 2 cents.Speakers: LSi9 x 2, LSic, LSiFX x 2, Velodyne HGS-15

I have the Mits 62" DLP and have not had a problem with it and i've had it for 2 years now. The PQ is outstanding. Just go with what you like the best. Good luck with your purchase.

That's about the best advice right there. Those are both very good sets, especially at the price point. Neither will give you a problem with gaming lag so I wouldn't worry about that. Both have bulbs that need to be replaced and I would imagine the time between replacement is dependent on the bulbs themselves, not the technology being used.
I was looking at the same models a few months ago and expected to buy the Sammie but ended up with the Sony. They both had fantastic HD pictures -(the Samsung a little sharper but whether that is better is based on taste/preference) but I thought the Sony did a notceably better job on SD. (also was able to get the 55" for $1500) Since we still watch a fair amount of SD, that was important to us. A couple sales reps told us they get a lot of returns on the Samsung because of the SD picture but that with careful calibration it's quite acceptable, so take that fwiw.
The dlp's seemed more sensitive to vertical off axis viewing but for typical viewing it probably wouldn't make much difference. They also displayed more noise on HD viewing at most of the places we looked but I haven't really heard too many complaints from owners so may not be a big deal.

I love my Samsung HL-S5086W, 50" DLP.
No rainbow effect (that I can detect, some people are more sensitive to this)
No geometry issues
No lag
The picture is beautiful once calibrated with DVE or Avia. Standard def TV takes some patience, but can be dialed in for a great picture. Color is difficult to get right with DVE, so I eye-balled it for realistic looking faces/grass/sky.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -
Again, thank you for all the input. I also do a lot of standard def. I have dish network, and most likely will not spring for the HD version of it, so all the shows i follow will be in sd. I have heard the samsung has good performance on sd, and I have also heard the same about the sony. I am sure the little things about each will differ the opinion as some, as so much is personal preference. Just hard to tell in the store. And some TVs in there I have heard rock look rather horrid, but I get the impression that is more of the signal being used. On either one, i did do some side stepping to observe from diff angles, high, low, etc, and didnt notice a diff in the 2. yes, it was slighter bright and clearer straight on, but it was not unbearable to me, at least in the stores, while off angle. So I can tell a little diff, but not a lot. It may be more at home, since I am used to the proscan I have used for the past 7 or so years.

I have Samsung's 71" DLP ... To me the Samsung was the best by far and significantly less expensive then Sony or Mitsu ... i.e. by more then $1000 ... These made the choice simpler then I thought it would be going in.

Well, that is part of my debate, is currently, the 2 models I listed as looking at, the 50" of both, exact same price. I would not go bigger then 50" for cost, and also for the fact my room is not that big. More of a be nice when I do have a bigger place.
