Did I pass up a good deal?

I was in my local BB today and seen where the Sony BDP-S1, blu-ray player was $899. The deal this week is the player itself comes with The Fifth Element, you get too free blu-ray disc for free and if you buy a blu-ray, you get another one for free so a total of five blu-ray titles. On top of all that I have the 12% off reward zone coupon along with an additional $40 dollars in reward zone certificates. So, if you took roughly $900 dollars and subtracted the 12% that knocks the price down to $792 then an additional $40 off that takes it down to $752 minus taxes. This deal is still good until the close of business tomorrow. If you had the extra funds laying around, would this player and price be worth it?

I agree with Bill, Cfriiz, and with Lou.. No sense in spending all that money when the whole HD DVD and BluRay war hasnt played out yet.. You will not find a better up-converting DVD player than the Oppo.. In several reviews and comparisons, the Oppo (@ around 150-200 bucks) actaully scored better than some 7,8, and 900+ dollar units..

Nah, and if you must have Blu-Ray you might as well just buy yourself a PS3 and get a gaming system as well. $600 is a better deal, or $500 even, if you want to get the less expensive version with the 20GB HD.

I remember paying $1400 CDN for a Panasonic VCR with wired remote back in 1982. It was top of the line. At the time, VCR's were so expensive that video rental stores weren't just renting vhs movies, they were renting the players as well.

If you regularly watch movies, you need one of the high def movie formats. It is awesome!

I personally am a movie nut. However with HBO, Showtime, TNT, ABC, CBS, NBC, Discovery, ESPN, ESPN2, UNIHD, MTVHD, discovery, and a few more channels that I can not even remember in High Definition, I can easily wait to spend $500+ on a player and $30+ on a movie while they duke it out. Put your money towards subscribing to a HD provider and a nice DVR.
Just today I watched "Rome", "Masters of Horror", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", and "Star Wars:Episoded I" in high definition. Try to do that with a HD-DVD or Blue-Ray player.Holydoc (Home Theatre Lover)

If you wait until next Christmas, you will be guaranteed to get better quality players at a lower cost. Just depends on how much you want to start enjoying the technology now. One thing you cannot get from any other hd source besides blu-ray is the extreme sound quality of multichannel lpcm. I haven't heard it yet 'cause my ps3 doesn't have analog outs, but from all reports it's as good as it gets right now for home theater. So yeah, you'd have to buy that stand-alone player (or have at least an hdmi 1.1 solution in a receiver or pre/pro to use with the ps3).
But as with all this stuff, better things are yet to come. HDMI 1.3, which the ps3 does have, is capable of passing dolby true hd and dts-hd master audio signals to a receiver/pre-pro. It also decodes dolby true hd internally and probably dts-hd through a future firmware update. But disks aren't really even out there yet with these formats and the first audio components aren't likely to hit 'till summer.
So you get a lot by waiting. But you also can't enjoy all the movies that are coming out with great lpcm tracks now. Your choice. How much money you have to burn for a year or two before you'll want to upgrade again. This is what we do on this forum all the time, right? So how much is a year or two enjoying stellar video AND audio worth? -
If you check Amazon, you can get the blu-ray player for less than 600 dollars. Not sure if it is a refurb, but saves you at least a couple hundred beans.Shawn

Grimster, in my opinion you would be crazy to spend $900 on one player that only playes one format, if you want to get into HD disc you can get a X-box 360 add-on for less than $200 and a Samsung Blu-Ray player for less than $500, granted it my be a refurb but the one I got came with the same warrenty that my A-1 came with new then you can have both formats for less than $700-$800 bucks and set back and wait till all this format stuff settles down.Casey

Wait on a universal HD-DVD/BluRay standalone. But, if you're looking to go hi-def now, PS3 does seem to be the way to go. You'll get better resale from it since it's not just a player, it's a gaming console, and it starts at a lower price, too. . . seems like a no brainer, if you want BluRay that bad.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

Just hang on Grim! I refused to get into the format war with the early DVD players, but I dropped over $900. for the first universal player that Pioneer put out. I still have it with no regrets & have both SACD's & DVD-A's in my collection of music that have played flawlessly!

It's a clone of the A1.
http://reviews.cnet.com/Toshiba_HD_A1/4505-6463_7-31736203.html?tag=txt#more
Just branded as a walmart exclusive. Expect prices to drop across the board for the first players out of the gate as the new players come out. You can get a samsung for an even bigger discount off its launch price.
I guess it means that they're discontinuing the D1 at walmart. Wondering if it will be replaced by the new Toshiba or if walmart's out of the clone game? -
