What? They want $300 for the following:

    • Basic power supply upgrade. This includes hyperfast, soft-recovery diodes to help quiet the power supply and give it quicker response time.
    • Opamp upgrade. We replace the cheap opamps with high-quality parts to make this unit sound even better.
    • Furutech IEC. We replace the stock IEC with a much higher-quality Furutech rhodium plated IEC for better power transfer at the interface.
    • We dampen and shield the chassis with Verastarr Starrdamp copper shielding material
    .

That's about $30 (or less) worth of supplies. That means about $270 for labor. Let's say labor costs are $60/hour. This equals 4.5 hours!!! Surely, it don't take that long. An hour tops. Once they add the IEC, you'll need to buy a power cord and add shipping costs to & fro. Geez.

I don't know why anyone would even consider spending 2x or 3x the retail price of the DVD player for minor upgrades such as these. Besides, the player will be outdated soon when prices for HD-DVD start dropping.

If you can solder, this might be an easy DIYer.

I got my Jolida JD-100 modified here, mainly because the price was to good to pass up. When I purchased it it was $910 with free shipping for the basic mods, and still covered under the 18 month warranty (i verified with Jolida on this).

This does seem pricey since with mine they did about the same amount of work, upgraded diodes, dampening, upgraded rcas, upgraded tubes, and upgraded wiring...all for $10 over regular price. Not to shabby for $10.

Many other brands do these type mods to, such as reference audio mods or Ric over at EVS as well as Bolder and I am sure Underwood will begin soon enough.

Agree...though I bet you many will go for it

I think the point here is also to show how popular the oppo has become...probably not long before others like Underwood start modding them; looks like a business opportunity to me...hell, if there are people willing to pay for it, I'd do it.

What would be the benefit? The reason the Oppo is popular is that it offers outstanding PQ and very decent SQ for a couple of hundred bucks. Upgrading power supplies, diodes, resistors, etc. might make it more bullet proof, but I can't see it improving performance enough to justify the cost.

    Combo rig:

    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

I agree with this; the benefit is to whoever offers these mods, and finds people that are willing to pay for it.;)

I think they've been doing this for a while now...
Word got around that the Oppo was a diamond in the rough for two-channel playback and now people are taking advantage of its reputation.

I gotta admit. I was fairly shocked at how good the 970 sounded when used as a source. I'm not at all surprised that people would try to build on this.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Let's face it -- it's a great DVD player, but for $150 - $200 retail, don't expect high quality components. With the money needed to turn the Oppo into a high quality CD player, you could buy a nice CD player instead.

I'm a firm believer in mods, but it's gotta be practical, both in terms of cost and value; otherwise, it is senseless.

    I agree...
its audio playback was just icing on the cake. No need to continue to beat that horse, as there might not be much left in the tank.

Best served to put that money toward a better source.

Were you ever able to determine if you just had a defective player or was it incompatible with your TV?

I'm using the Oppo 971 with great results on my Mits WS48315 CRT RPTV..just curious.

Always have and always will. Before this the Toshiba (3960?) was the hot unit to mod, as well as the Samsung (841?), Pioneer 563, and I recall a Panasonic as well before all of these. On the upper end popular models are the Denon players like the 3930 and the 5910, used to be the 5900 and 2900, as well as the Pioneer Elite DV-47ai was a popular one, along with the older 45a.

$300 in mods to Oppo? That's funny. Although as I've sat here typing, the idea has gone from ridulous to....wait, where do I ship this thing to again? You guys are bad news. I'm banning myself from this forum.

I don't know anything about Hot Rod, but I have two DVD players who went through mods, and I've been extremely happy with them. I would have gone and send my Oppo too had I not have too many modded players as is.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D
