Check this out for yourself.. Paula Abdul was on FOX13 in Seattle last week.. promoting the new season of American Idol. Take a look and decide if she was just being her cute self or was she smoking to much whacky something.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zt5-wn3fvlw

this clip isn't the entire thing.. it cut out the beginning where she is really spaced out.. they blamed it on her not being able to hear the anchors... i think otherwise. I wish i could find the whole thing. sorry i can't though

"In 2005 Abdul revealed she suffers from a neurological disorder that causes chronic pain and requires a weekly injection of an anti-inflammatory drug."

I would guess she is on painkillers a lot.

Ah, this is like the third year in a row where Paula has "conveniently" made it in the headlines the week befoe American Idol airs.

All the years this show has been on, I've watched probably a grand total of 5 minutes of it. Not my cup of tea.
    No excuses!

You've seen 4 minutes and 55 seconds more thant me (I'm assuming a cumulative total of 5 seconds as I scan past the station with the remote)

American Idol is funny in the audition stages at the very start. After that it's everything that's wrong with music.

I watched AI last night for the first time... what drivel, the editors mix the really good with the really bad/emotionals and paint a happy picture for the goodies and exploit the not-so-goodies. It's silly at best.

Never used to watch it, and got sucked in last year. Here's why :
    - for the tryouts phase (happening now), it's pure exploitation. And I love it. People sign themselves up for this crap and delude themselves that they're great, and get crushed. It's cringe inducing and hilarious at the same time. Unlike other shows that exploit people but pretend they're doing something good, Idol doesn't even try to pretend they're good. They outright mock them.
    - During the later phases, some of the singing is actually good. It has nothing to do with what's rigth and wrong with music, I don't even know how that could be; it's just some really good vocal performing, and that's it.

I always hated it before, sight unseen, but having seen it I find it enjoyable.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

What is this "Amer-ican I-dol", of which you speak?
    Haven't heard of it..
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

i don't like the show either. but last night there was nothing good on.. so i got stuck watching AI for about the last 20 mins. sucky singers... and some really odd balls out there.

Tonight though should be crazy. they are in Seattle..and i guess alot of the people really sucked.. more so than usual.

But i also think the producers of the show... right now during the auditions. are ONLY picking the really bizarre people.. it makes the show more funny if you have a whole bunch of oddballs trying out. Gives Simon food to bash someone. Without oddball contestants, no one would watch the show. Trust me, they have been promoting the oddball singers all week long.. it's going to get them ratings.

Being able to sing a song is a lot different than being a musician, including actually writing your own lyrics. Most of these people aren't musicians. They're merely molded into something they're not so their voice can be sold. The dopes that never heard good music gobble it all up and it sells. I can sing okay, and I have no desire to sing Sinatra songs on AI.

We watched several of the broadcasts last night on youtube (and there's one with Keith Oberman (olberman? I forget) - that does a nice compilation of a bunch of the ones she filmed during a two our stint. She's looking out of it on all of them. Yeah - I agree with the earlier comment that it's very convenient this happens the week the show starts every year... :-)

As far as AI goes - we don't really watch it except for the highlights on the morning show we watch (the Daily Buzz on the CW network). I'm not a big fan of show at all.

So... someone who has a nice voice but can't write a song or play an instrument for **** doesn't still sound nice? There's plenty of bands out there where the vocalist doesn't write the songs, nor can he or she play an instrument, does that make that person a bad musician too?

I'm not saying you have to like it, I just don't understand the ire. It doesn't pretend to be anything it's not - it's a singing (and looks / style, unfortunately) competition. Can you sing? Yes or no. If you can, you win. The ones who go beyond that into being actually successful acts have to bring something else to the table. Really, of all the winners in five seasons, how many have ACCTUALLY done anything in the music world (a music world which has HORRIBLE standards, mind you)? Two? Clarkson had a few songs, and Carrie Underwood is a pretty big deal. Beyond that, there's three other seasons of winners who you never hear about. So it's not like they're getting a free ride just for their voice, after the show, all they have is a name and have to build off of it.

I feel like an idiot defending this show, but I just try not to take it seriously as anything more than a singing competition, and if I do that I can enjoy it. My original hatred of it stemmed on pretty much waht yours does, that they're force-feeding "stars" down our throats, but... they're not REALLY. At least you don't have to take it that way.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

It's just a singing competition? C'mon. These tools are guaranteed a recording contract and then bandied about all over the place as if we're to take them seriously. The sad part is that people do, and that's what I object to. I think it's everything that is wrong with music today. Mindless drivel completely devoid of soul. I'd rather listen to Bob Dylan tell a soulful story with his songs than a 'nice voice'. Carry on, I'm clearly in the minority.

Nothing wrong with a nice voice. I like nice voices. Nice voices sell records, so pRoducers also like nice voices. What's wrong with nice voices?

Except for Clarkson, winning seems to be almost a curse... I see marketing constantly for many AI alumni -most didn't win.

I don't know, while I don't really like it or watch it (I'm just not a big pop standards kind of guy...) - I think the whole thing is kind of fun. There are definitely much worse things that could be being shoved down our throats. ;)

Success in the music business is very interesting - or any business really - really great chops are not necessarily the be all end all... it helps, but the right look, the right marketing machine, the right bit of luck, the right timing, the right rehashing of music from 20 years ago, that all comes into play.
