6.5 comps vs 5.25

I honestly don't know why i am posting this, because I already know the answer. I guess I just want someone to convince me that my 5.25 I.D.'s are going to be more than adequate to cover the midbass/mid sound stage.

Time is a killer for me, as I re-think everything when I sit idle waiting on stuff. I had to do my very first Pay Pal claim against another e bayer (after some 300+ dealings on e bay) and it was for the Eclipse CD7000 HU. So the front sound stage that was to be set up and completed by now is just sitting since I have no source unit to aim mids with.

Now when I first planned out my system, I was going to put the mids in the doors, so I had no choice but to get the 5.25's. Now I have been convinced to go with kick pods...so size makes no matter now.

By a show of hands, how many of you think I can pull off high caliber front stage with only 5.25's? I have the I.D. IDQ 12" DVC for a sub, with the Polk 500.1. The mids and tweets will be run by the 400.4.

H.U. is now up in the air again. I am seriously considering going back to Alpine, and running the 701 processor.

OBVIOUSLY the 6.5's are going to give me a better low end from the get go, but do I take it as a personal challenge to make the 5's sound good? Or will I always want for the 6's?

I hate being O.C. :(

You can do it! (said like Rob Schneider, in an Adam Sandler movie)

As you surmised, the 6.5s will play lower and do a better job of "midbass up front", but it is possible to have things sounding great with use of a smaller driver.

I wouldn't suggest 4" unless they're part of a three way system, but with 5.25s you should be able to pull it off.

    Then again, I'm biased ;) .

You're using the SR5250's for your front stage? How do you have them mounted, and what's your opinion of how it sounds?

    Thanks for the reply!

Mids in factory door locations. Tweets above and slightly forward, using angle mount cups.

I like them alot. You may want to listen to a set first, but they're really nice- play surprisingly low for a 5 1/4" mid.

I'm guessing you've never heard the 5250's , installed in a car ? Several of us like the 5250 vs 6500, the mid/tweeter just "seems to blend a tad better". The 5250 also puts out a heck of a lot mid bass!
If your spoiled(like me), 5250's in the kicks, 6500 woofer in the doors.

Nice to hear! I guess I will run the 5.25's after all. Although I am not using the SR's (I have the Image Dynamics Chameleon components) there is a strong possibility I will look into a set to compare.

To answer your question, no I haven't heard the SR's. I live in a small town, and the selection here is very limited. I base a lot of my purchases off of a ton of research, and unfortunately that's the best I can do for now.

You guys are very helpful though!!

Lake Havasu City, AZ for now. We are planning a move to Prescott AZ here in a few months. My family and I moved down to Arizona from Spokane WA when I was 15, and we have been here for 19 years. I ran the car audio deptartment (PPI, Kicker, and Pioneer) of a local store here when I was 19-20, and did all the installs as well. back in the day though, it was all about the bass, and I was the only kid in town who cared about sound quality. I remember when my best friend freaked out that I dumped one of my 12's (ran a single Kicker 12") and added a set of 4" mids to my doors to go along with the 6.5's and tweets.

I didn't know a thing about how to set up real SQ, but I knew I was sick of the bass only thing.

I got out of it for a LONG time, briefly stepped back in about 5 years ago, and set up a system in my Ranger, but then sold the truck, and now I am serious about getting my Mach 1 dialed in.

Anyway, I know you probably don't care, but I thought I would give a little background on myself. lol

There is a 2150 art series PPI on e bay right now, and that is what I used to run. I am seriously wanting that thing simply for nostalgic reasons....but 250.00 is a bit much for something I don't even need.

So ummm, yeah I live in Lake Havasu....:p ;):D

There is no replacement for displacement.

The 6500's will have better midbass response and will get down lower than the 5250's.

However I did notice that the 5250's have a tighter kick than the 6500's. I actually have my 5250's running down to 110 Hz even tho my 6500's run up to 200 Hz. Overlapping them like this adds the increased energy of the 6.5's with the better kick of the 5.25's. Works pretty well.

That being said, Im not sure if you can make the 6500's work in the kicks easily. They would take up a lot of room.

The best way is to go with 6500's in the doors running as midbasses and then 5250's in the kicks running midrange.
