I know a good amount of people have Damien's first album, O as I do and absolutely love it for its music and especially its superb SQ. I recently picked up his follow-up, 9. I was hoping for some more of the same but of course with a more refined style as it had been three years since O and most artists become more refined as their career progresses.

Boy was I let down. I have not given it a critical listen for SQ yet, but music wise he has seemed to backslide from where he was. As a little background, he is Irish but never gave that away in his music. Now, his stuff definitely could be described as a progression from Irish Folk (Not necessarily a bad thing but....)

On O, all the tracks were sonically amazing and many which were just heavenly, I can think of no better word for his smooth vocals and accompaniment which included violins, cello, piano, clarinet, and one musician is even credited with opera in the album. The single off of 9, 9 Crimes is pretty good musically as is a few others. This album in no way compares with O but in all honesty, I didn't expect it too.

If you enjoyed Damien Rice's O and even like David Gray's early (and I mean early) stuff then pick 9 up and just imagine it is the precursor to O, because it makes more sense that way.

And if you don't have O, RUN, do not walk, and get it. Even if you do not like the music, the SQ is some of the best there is on a commercial release and I know several people here as other places or will claim the same.
