My son has a compaq sr1200nx desktop with XP. It works OK, but I think it has too many processes running. If I go to task manager, there are 45 processes running without doing anything on the computer. Can someone tell me what programs are required on the start menu? I did a msconfig, but am afraid to uncheck any of the programs. Thanks, Jeff

There are many different things that run in the background just with the comp running. Don't forget any antivirus, antispam, firewalls, windows svcs pgms (explorer), adobe, printer drivers (w/fax pgms), updaters, etc. These all run in the background too.
Windows defender will break down all pgms that are running into categories. Not a bad pgm. It is free to windows users

Nothing that you uncheck in MSConfig will cause the computer not to boot. (to the point that you cannot recheck them)
If you are curious, just go to MSConfig, click the startup tab and for each line, put the line exactly (in quotes) in google and that will give you a good idea of what program it is launching.

How much memory do you have installed? This is the easiest thing to do to improve the performance of your computer. Unless you have a minimum of 512K installed your computer will run slowly.

The only things I have checked on the Startup tab on MSconfig are my antivirus control center and Adobe gamma (a monitor calibration for Photoshop). As others have said, there really isn't anything there that's necessary for the computer to boot. Task manager shows I have 18 processes running, if I've got nothing open.

I spoke to Compaq and they told me what programs are necessary. I also installed more RAM, so I have 768 MB RAM now. It seems to be working great. Now my son is downlaoding a 2 gig game! I am sure it will be screwed up by the time he is down! Thanks for all the help!

There is your major problem. Never let children on your machine if you want it to perform. Get them their own to thrash around with and when it bogs down just reformat it

Believe me, I know that. It is his computer. My computer has 0 games downladed. He crashes his computer all the time!
