Couldn't find a thread about this movie anywhere, so here goes.

Just watched this. Thought it was fantastic. Visually great, the story was entertaining, good characters.... just good all around. I actually thought the "surprise ending" was kind of predictable, but didn't care in the least. Totally recommended.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Thanks, Bobman. I bought this one yesterday, because admittedly Edward Norton is my favorite actor by far. Haven't watched it yet, but I am glad to hear you liked it.

BTW -- If you have seen this and like it make sure you see The Prestige. This comes from a friend who has seen both, and I would recommend The Prestige on it's own having seen that myself.

I heard that he broke 3 bones in his back last week while filming a new movie. Great actor. Especially American History X, imho - his best role and performance.

Have this movie waiting in my mailbox for me tonight courtesy of Netflix... I've been dying to see both this and The Prestige. I love the history of magic... especially during its heyday around the turn of the (last) century.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. While I liked "The Illusionist", I felt that there was something missing. I for one could have sat through another 30-45 minutes of this movie, without fatigue. His skills could have been better explained that way......like where did he disappear to for all those years....where did he learn the illusions...etc, etc.

I have a feeling that "The Prestige" will be an even better movie and I can't wait to get it on HD DVD or Blu-Ray, whichever it's released on.

My God, this movie was fantastic. Don't know what else to say. It was a bit oddly paced, but it was easy to overlook.

My wife and I just watched this last night. After seeing "The Prestige" and now this one, "The Illusionist" takes the cake big time. The prestige just had something lacking, whereas this movie here, was rock solid. I actually liked the fact that they didn't tell you the complete background. Left it open to interpretation. I agree that I could have had easily another 40 mins and never once been bored.

A top notch film, if anybody hasn't seen it. Excellent directing, excellent acting, and a superb plot.

Sure am glad I blind bought it :D:D

I liked both the Illusionist and Prestige, both fantasies, but the Illusionist was from a romantic short story. While it was a very tight adaptation, it was light fantasy. The illusions (which I thought were understated, yet compelling) were clearly CGI or camera tricks. The Prestige made no bones about the business side of magic and exposed the illusions. It was a much deeper story and took a few very entertaining twists. I'll probably watch the Illusionist again, but buy the Prestige.

For some reason, I've fallen asleep twice while trying to watch this one. Once on a transatlantic flight, and then yesterday evening. The first half was good though.

On the other hand, this particular individual was wide awake through "Idiocracy" before we put "The Illusionist" on.

:D I had to turn Idiocracy off after a 1/2 hour. The premise was fine but the execution was on the par with the 2505 culture...just not smart enough to keep me interested.

The execution? Not smart enough to keep you interested? What movies do keep you interested?

And What is the 2505 culture? Never heard of that before...

I personally thought it was superb acting, and an all around top notch drama. Sorry you didn't like it. I guess not everyone is born with taste ;)

I was describing Idiocracy not the Illusionist. I did think the Illusionist was a smart and well acted romantic fantasy.

My neighbor and I just finished this, she loved it as much as I did. We both felt like it was as if you were watching an oil painting in motion, every scene was beautifully shot. Two thumbs up to the art director on this one. Loved the cast, the acting was good, and the story was decent.

    Bump from the dead!

I've watched this a few times, but watched it again last night.

This is STILL one of my top movies of all time. The filming shots are incredible, the storying engrossing as hell, and Norton does an amazing job in it.

Anyone know if this is out on Blu-Ray?

I love this movie (certainly gets the nod over The Prestige). It actually inspired me to decorate one of my rooms with vintage magic posters and various oddities.

I think I actually liked The Prestige better but mainly because they touched on a guy I admire alot. No, not Hugh Jackman, although from everything I've seen in interviews and such, he's good people. But rather Nikola Tesla. But this is a thread for the Illusionist, which is a good film itself as well.

    +1

Liked them both, but Prestige by a length. For me the "Prestige" of Tesla played the players.... since I subscribe to that camp.

Sadly, not on Blu yet. But I'll pick it up on street day when it hits, fantastic film! Hands down, way better then The Prestige. I found that one boring.
