Connecting Sub with Sub Cable = no bass

Hey all,
My current setup is a Denon avr2807 receiver, a pair of RTi10s, a pair of FXi surrounds, csi5 center, and a psw505 subwoofer. I tried connecting my subwoofer with an MB300 monster subwoofer cable but I get no bass whatsoever. I made sure the subwoofer setting was turned on in the receiver and that the channel level in the receiver was turned up but still had nothing coming from it. I originally plugged it into the unfiltered port on the back of the subwoofer and then tried the other filtered ports but still had no bass. For the hell of it I tried turning the subwoofer option to off but that didn't work. I have my front speakers set to Large, and the center + surrounds set to small. When I hooked up the subwoofer using Monster speaker cable to the front speaker ports, the subwoofer plays fine except for a humming noise when the receiver is turned off. It does not Hum when the receiver is on. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? I would really prefer to be using the subwoofer cable. Also what is the recommended frequency to have the subwoofer at when watching DVDs? Thank you very much for any advice.
-Adam

Try setting the fronts to small. Sometimes receivers see the large as no-sub. You may have to set up the sub usage in each sound format, I know that my HK has separate settings for DTS, Dolby, etc.

Thanks for the reply Dennis. I tried setting the fronts to small in a couple formats (Widescreen and 5ch mode). I also tried switching between LFE and LFE main with no luck. Any other ideas?

Sounds like there may be something wrong with the 505. Connect the analog sub out from your DVD player directly to the subwoofer and try it out.

Thanks for the reply PolkThug. Just for the hell of it I connected the AC power plug into the avr receiver rather than into the wall and it started to work. Very weird... Thank you all for the help!

DO NOT connect the subs power cable to the AVR. It draws too much current, and will damge the Denon.

    Try a different wall socket.

Good advice.....also try throwing a cheater plug on the sub and go direct to the wall outlet.Sounds like a ground loop problem.Do not plug it into the receiver..do not...do not!!
