I was reading in another thread about LOTR in HD DVD, when a post was made about watching this movie in HD. Which brought up a question. Instead of highjacking the thread I decided to ask it here.

I always assumed (and we know what happens when you assume), the movies brodcast over cable or sat, were upconverted from SD to HD? Or are the movies in true HD?

For example, LOTR or Star Wars that played on HD HBO was HD or upconverted?

When movies play on networks such as HBO they almost always have the HD master which they broadcast. However, stations like TNTHD upconvert movies all the time.

Star Wars and LOTR was done in 2.35 aspect ratio, but for some reason 1.85 is on my screen with HD cable. The aspect versions of these movies in HD shouldnt change from 2.35 to 1.85? Should they?

They can easily change for many different reasons. When a film is shot the full physical 35mm frame is used. The director decides on the aspect ratio he wants to adhere to. Later on when transfers are made the aspect ratio can be changed.

Which Star Wars movies are you talking about?

But my understanding is that, 2.35 is the original aspect ratio, which is used for higher Pq. Transfering it to 1.85, you would loose picture and clarity.
