Not sure how to search for this so...I currently run my DVD video signal directly to my TV via component cables. Would it be more beneficial to run it through my Onkyo 989 first? Sorry if this is often asked question from noobs. Thanks.

If the DVD player is your only video source, connect it to your TV. Otherwise you can use your Onkyo for switching. Some good reading here http://www.polkaudio.com/education/index.php

I don't believe that 989 will add anything to our component input (on screen menu / volume) to it's output. The 989 will only switch input nothing else is being done, the composite video input are up converted to S-Video out and this is the only way to see the on screen menu via S-Video or Composite video out.
I know it's more info than you asked for, but it's added info you may need.

You may not be ready now but at a later date you may want to add something like a game machine, another DVD, VCR player, or whatever to your system. The amp will change the pic along with the sound at the same time and you won't have to change your orignal wiring if you pass your video through your amp now.Be gentle, I'm new to all this...

Now if you have seperate outputs for the dvd and hd, then going through the receiver and using it for switching audio and video together would be an advantage.
But being contrary, here are some advantages of having a tv switch video, and a receiver switch the audio:
1) Theoretically better picture quality (in practice, most people don't see a differance).
2) You can listen to a cd/dvd (in the dvd player) while watching tv.
3) Drives the wife crazy.Win7 Media Center -> Onkyo TXSR702 -> Polk Rti70 -
