Those are Canadian dollars though.....besides even after exchange things tend to be more expensive up here.

Unfortunately it's pretty hard to get good deals on polk product in Canada without ordering from the states. They really don't go on sale that often (for very much off) so those prices are pretty decent. I had to order my LSi9's from Polk in Ontario to get an amazing deal. Taking a long time to arrive but it'll be worth it when they're here and the monitor 7's are out of the main rig

The Lsi 15's retail for 2600.00 where I live. They are only carried by one outlet called Visions Electronics. When they go on sale they list them for 2200.00. At the time (last January) I was buying my speakers I was more interested in the Rti 12 (which they don't carry the Rti series) and the manager at Visions was really trying to convince me over the phone that the Lsi's were better and wanted me to come down for an audition. I actually already purchased the Rti 12 from another dealer and they were on order at the time. I ended buying the Lsi's for 1700.00 - 1800.00 because he knew I bought the Rti's already (2000.00). I bought the only pair of 15's they sold.

I actually developed a good repor with the manager there and he gave me excellent deals. I just recently went there before Christmas but he didn't work there anymore. I have his email so I hope he is still working somewhere for when I am in the market for a display.

Another rediculous example was the top HK avr (I think 3700, not sure). I seen it online in the low teens and Future Shop listed it at 3500.00. crazeeee

I hate to say it but a lot of my gear has come from the USA based on price alone. The prices is Canada are absurd at times.

How much does customs charge you guys from the great white north to bring the goods over? Do the savings really add up or are they kinda neutralized by all that cross border stuff?

I think it depends how you have it shipped over. UPS totally rapes us when they bring stuff over. There are actually many lawsuits against them for this. When I purchased my Modwright pre I bought it as a demo from Bill Baker of Response Audio for 1600 USD. I asked him how he was shipping it and he said he would ship USPS. I guess this was a typo because it came UPS. It ended up being an expensive typo as a couple months later I got this charge to my credit card for 330.00. I actually reported it to the credit card company because I thought that my card had been used by somebody else. Nope I was wrong it was the UPS customs charge.....totally ridiculous.

edit: I totally don't get this because if something is American made aren't we not supposed to pay any duty? Isn't that what the whole free trade agreement was all about?

Getting hit by fees from customs is the main reason I try to not buy from outside of Canada. Sometimes you can get away with it and pay nothing, but other times it's pretty brutal. I bought speakers from seattle for $200 and about a month after receiving them got a bill in the mail saying I owed $170 in border fees. Luckily it was still a great deal, but I got lucky because the 200 I paid initally was way below what they were worth.

I think you can avoid the fees if the value of the item is claimed to be less than $100 and shipped through usps. If you claim it to be valued as that and it's really worth double you risk taking a bigger loss if it ever gets damaged or lost.
