Or when someone makes a blanket statement such as "all music from the '80's sucks". What you mean to say is that all the FM garbage that was forced down everyone's throats sucked, but in that case you can insert any decade into that equation.

I got a boxed set this Christmas called Left of the Dial: Sounds of the 80's Underground. It amaze me the wealth of unbelievable music that was put out during this decade. Of course, everyone just thinks Jefferson Starship and Huey Lewis...
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

The 80's was by far the most influential and entertaining musical era of all time.....:D I still listen to my collection of Billboard's Best of the 80's CD's and love every minute of it.

Pearl Jam, I think, desreves to be mentioned in the contemporary rock discussion IMO. They may be truly "Grunge" (whatever that means anymore), but they are a talented band who I enjoy listening to still.

Well - I "grew up" in the 80's (born in '70) so a huge chunk of my collection is 80's music. Rock, synthpop, industrial, jazz, etc... There's good and bad music anywhere ya look...

One of those VH1 countdowns had Starship's We Built This City as the worst song of all time. It may not be the worst of all time - but it certainly deserves to be on the list...

I've almost forgotten what this thread was originally about... ;)

Some interesting choices on that 80's collection. Fun stuff! Scarily - I have a lot of the albums those tracks came off of (or other albums from the same artist) - only a few bands I don't recognize. Quite a few of them I was very into at the time...

Ever seen the live music film "Urgh! A Music War"? - it's hilarious to see now. A lot of 80's college/underground type bands.

Nope... but I'll toss it on Netflix and call it a day. Left of the Dial was meant as a follow-up to Rhino's No Thanks! punk box set...
Notice how Rhino has cornered the market on "best-of's"? Do a damn fine job at that... not just singles or hits, but real attempts to put together a "best of" collection. Kind of a rare approach to take by either label or artist.

Urgh is definitely hit and miss - but to see some of those bands live and so early in their career (1981)... fun stuff. Gang of Four, Cramps, Police, XTC, Gary Numan, Devo, etc. etc. etc... Here's what IMDB says is on the soundtrack - it's been a long time since I've seen it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0138902/soundtrack

Yeah - Rhino has done a nice job. Cleopatra kind of became the king (queen?) of putting out the more goth side of the 80's. I had a friend with at least 5 different goth 80's box sets... humorous. I have a hilarious tribute to the 80's by a bunch of 'modern' goth bands - it's hit and miss although someone does a spot on cover of INXS Don't Change.

    Speaking of The Cramps...
    have you seen this?

I've seen 'em live once and they were stellar, but this is something else all together.

No - I've never even heard of that Cramps concert. What a riot.
