My credit card number was stolen

The fraud unit of the CC company called me to verify a suspicious transaction. It turned out that someone had used my CC number on 3 transactions from the same e-retailer for a total of about $3,000. I am wondering how did the thief get the whole of my CC number? I have heard and read many stories about other people's CC numbers were stolen, but never thought that could happen to me. In the past, I did not pay much attention to the transaction activities on my CCs. I am going to check the activities on a regular basis.

That really blows. Sorry to hear it, but you should turn out alright. I check my credit card transactions on-line on an almost daily basis, regardless of whether or not I've authorized a transaction that day. A minute of my time is worth the peace of mind.

Calls from someone saying your CC was stolen and having you verify all your info is the biggest scam out there. Make sure who you talked to was legit. In other words...CALL YOU BANK!
    Good luck kn

True, but my wife has one card where they seem to call after every transaction she makes. Talk about "fraud protection". One time we waited for the call after buying something at Circuit City and sure enough it came within five minutes.

Maybe they just couldn't believe that we would actually spend money at Circuit City:D

    Hello

Yes, mines the same way. Every transaction I do within a few minutes the phone call rings no matter what. Its fine with me...... I also have a continuous monitor through Equifax and all the credit reporting agencies.

I would definitely call your credit card company directly and ask them if this is legit. There are many scammers who do this to get your information; CANCEL THAT CARD IMMEDIATELY AND FILE A FRAUD CLAIM. I had my card stolen and there were 5,000 dollars on Best Buy; they caught the guy like 4 months later using the security camera from Best Buy after the CC company launched the investigation. It took a lot of time and I had a lot of headaches, but I wasn't responsible for 5,000 dollars thankfully.

Very popular scam. I hope they did not get your CC info from you.
I check my debit bank card online everyday and yes sure enough about three months ago, a pair of WestJet airlines tickets were purchased 3000 miles away. The bank took care of everything.

Ouch. CC fraud is getting almost as bad as death and taxes. I download all my CC transactions into Quicken so I review each and every one. You don't want to know my grocery bill last year. X^P

i've gotten a couple of these calls before and they were legit. everything was taken care of relatively painlessly.

if you get a call from the credit card company and they want you to give information about yourself, tell them thank you and that you will call them right back at the telephone number found on your bill or credit card. if it's the credit card company calling, they will appreciate and understand your concern and tell you how to direct your callback from there.

The card was cancelled and replaced with a new card. They also informed me that I will not be responsible for any unauthorized purchases.
I hope that they will catch the thief since they shipped the items to a physical address.

I'm really sorry you are going through this, it can make you feel as though you've been violated.

All my credit cards have a proactive system of thwarting theives where I put a $50 limit any charges made higher than that amount, I get an immediate email or txt message which ever I choose to notify me of the transaction. I then can check it out online and give the CC company warning of a problem if there is one. Has anyone noticed the last day or two that when you swipe your MAC or CC a screen comes up asking your zip code? I guess this is another attempt at security.

Ever hand your card to a waiter/waitress at a restaurant? Some virus install a keylogger on your computer. Another method is when you give your number to someone over the phone for a purchase, not everyone has honest employee's. There are many ways.

Luckily you are protected against unauthorized use. You may also want to set up a fraud alert with the credit agencies.

They can also grab your info other ways. People can get into the databases at major vendors and take the numbers from there. It happened last year I believe with Mastercard and Visa. There was a vendor that was hacked and ended up compromising thousands of cards. This does happen actually a lot more than what anyone would like.
Also Emails that claim they are from the CC company's and want you to verify info, text messages, ect. It happens a lot.

I have gotten a few calls from my CC company in the past as well, seemingly as soon as the transaction was cleared, lol. Hopefully you can get this resolved quickly and get back to the grind, lol.

American Express took care of the problem. I have another AE card that had not been used for more than 2 years. Last month, AE called to confirm a transaction. That transaction was not made by me. I told AE to cancell the card since I dont need it.

I have other credit cards with other companies that had not been stolen. There must be something going on with AE.
