Anyone know of any box sets or large greatest hits CDs out there for The Who? I've been hearing tons of their music on the radio lately and am quite addicted. I have 1 so-called greatest hits I bought a long time ago, but it has a very much shortened radio edit of Won't Get Fooled. Sucks really bad!

Have the Who ever put out an album that WASN'T a friggin' compilation? I've never seen more Greatest Hits from a band than the Who.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

They were pretty much done after Keith Moon died. In my mind "Who Are You" was the last real Who album. And you are right, 11 or so studio albums, 70+ compilation or "Live" albums.

All of the GH's i've ever seen were so incomplete. The 2 disc that Shack posted is the best one yet that I know of.

The "Moon" era Who is simply awesome, ya gotta admit.

John, get "The Who, Live At Leeds," the best live performance ever recorded. What you hear on that recording is what The Who are all about, maximum R&B!

"The Who Join Together" box set. I've seen this released as double LP, CD, and cassette. This auction didn't sell at $6

Ditto F1's recommendation for "Live at Leeds" - Outsanding! Next best single Who disc would be "Who's Next". "Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy" isn't too bad. And if you haven't heard "Tommy" you should certainly give it a listen.

Definite 3rd for "Live at Leeds". Another strong one is "Quadrophenia". Their lesser known (but IMHO better) musical. Blows "Tommy" out of the water. I have the MoFi release if you're interested in borrowing it. It will definitely give that new SVS a workout.

I just didn't care for Quadrophenia, although the recording was good. That was one of the early Quadrophonic recordings, a primitive, near prehistoric shot at multichannel.

I like the structure of it, with the main characters each having a theme that was expanded upon throughout the soundtrack. Reminds me of a classical compostion, at least what I remember from my music appreciation class in college. The dynamics of the crashing waves, and Entwistles bass lines are also things I really like. The film itself is easier for me to enjoy compared to Tommy. I'd rather have Sting, mods, rockers, fights, and pills then creepy Uncle Ernie, Anne Margeret and Elton John any day.

Of course, neither is a compilation, so they could be neither here nor there.

He likes to fiddle aaaa-bout, fiddle aaa-bout fiddleabout.

Tommy kills Quadrophenia any day of the week, BTW. Quadrophenia is pretty much roundly knocked as being an utter failure.

I kick myself daily for not going to see them last year. Looks like the 2 disc is much more complete.

There's a pretty good box set called "Thirty Years of Maximum R&B", or something like that. I have some quibbles with it (e.g., it contains the edited, single version of "5:15") but it's better than nothing.

EDIT: FWIW, Quadrophenia is probably my second favorite 'OO album (after Who's Next). Given that, IMNSHO, Who's Next is the single best R&R album of them all, that is saying something.
