Help Adjusting Amp for db212

Ok, I have the polk db212-2 subs and they are hooked up to an MA Audio Hk1000d amp with 800 watts rms @ 2 ohm's. The rated rms powering for the subs is 720 rms and i actually called polk and talked to a technician and he told me 800-1000 watt rms amp is what is needed to power these subs, not to mention its always good to slightly overpower your subs. So i have had them hooked up since saturday (today is my sixth day with em) to me they sound great but i was hoping it would be louder, and when i turn my gain up past 60% it stopped getting louder, the bass boost was at about half and the low pass filter and sub sonic adjustments at half also. http://sonicelectronix.com/item_3474.html thats my amp. I tried turning down the bass boost but it didn't help. So then i put everything at about 50% and then today when i got in mny car my battery needle was at about 3... I think i fried a diode in the alternator. im getting a new one that puts about 18 volts, i was also thinking about maybe getting a capacitor. Plus i was going to get better connections on my battery terminals.

    The gain is not a volume control. It simply matches the amps input with the HU's output signal so that when the HU is at 50%, the amp is at 50%. If its set too high you push the amp into clipping which can blow speakers. 50% is probably about right.

    Sounds like your alternator is shot and that was the problem. Probably wouldnt be a bad idea to run down to Autozone and pick up one of their Duralast Gold batteries. 1000 amps for $70. Cant beat that. That along with a new alternator should fix things up.

    im getting a new alt, and then everntually a new battery, would you recommend a capacitor? also how should i set my subsonics and low pass filters on the amp

    You should not need a capacitor, do the big 3 instead.

    Subsonic filter should be around the tuning frequency of your enclosure. A good place to start with the low pass filter is around 80Hz and adjust to taste.
