Dolby Digital 5.1

Does anyone know what TV shows are recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1? I went to the Dolby website, and found a supposed "list", but when I try to watch one of them, my receiver doesn't pick up the dolby digital signal. It is set to Auto.
I have a digital optical audio cable from the satellite receiver to the AVR. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any help you may provide.

I believe it has to be a high definition feed for it to broadcast in DD. Is that what you are using or are you trying to get DD from a standard definition feed?
MichaelMains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms) -
It is standard definition. I have yet to make the move to HD. If that is true, that sucks.

Without high def - I think stereo is all you get. Turn on the PLIIx (movie) and upgrade your TV next....

Go HD!!!! And it doesn't suck.;)
PS. Your not missing anything. TV DD is nothing like DVD, your DSP's or analog will yeild great tv sound. -
You don't need HD to get TV programs on DD; my Directv box (no HD) passes some movies in DD. Not regular TV though...not sure where the difference might be.
HD is the way to go; I always tell people that I love my $75 antenna that gives me all the HD programming I need_________________________________________________

Thanks for the answers guys. At least I know I'm not doing something wrong with my settings.
Scottvamp, I would love to go HD soon, but with two 3-year olds running around the house, I think I'll wait a few years until the threat of an errant toy smashing through the LCD monitor is diminished. -

Seven and nine year old running around this house. Add friends to this mix. Diminished??
I think the potential for smashed items are directly proportional to increases in age.So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

I mainly watch sports in HD, which of course isn't Dolby engineered.
But when the commercals come on, you can really hear the difference. -
Your are so right about the commercials, i am constantly turning my volume down during them.

watching nbc tonight and the commercials are out of control louder than the show but all in DD tonightSpeakers:

I've always wanted to know why some commercials tend to be louder than the actual show your viewing. I thought it was purposely done to wake the hell out of you and send a statement "watch me, watch me" Do some receivers have some kind of equalization setting that keeps both commercials and the show your watching at the same volume levels ? This would be a great option to have.Pioneer VSX-1016TXV-K AVR

Not sure if you have noticed but your TV shows are in DD yet your commercials are in PL. PL is less compressed therefore making it louder. The DD sound is compressed (if I'm not mistaken) making you turn it up. Same principal as watching a tv show and watching a DVD. when i watch tv reg not HD i'm at 50 on my receiver for movies i'm at 35-25 on my hk. Watching HD I'm @45-35. Not sure if this helps any.

Also, DD is not necessarily 5.1. DD is an encoding/compression algorithm that can be applied mono, stereo, 5.1, etc.
For example, some of my Time Warner broadcasts are in stereo and some are in 5.1, but they're all DD.5.1 and 2.0 ch Basement Media Room: Outlaw 975/Emotiva DC-1/Rotel RB-1582 MKII/Rotel RB-1552/Audiosource Amp 3/Polk LS90, CS400i, FX500i/Outlaw X-12, LFM-1/JVD DLA-HD250/Da-Lite 100" HCCV/Sony ES BDP/Sonos Connect. DC-1/RB-1582 MKII/Sonos Connect also feed Polk 7C in garage or Dayton IO655 on patio.
2.1 ch Basement Gym: Denon AVR-2807/Klipsch Forte I or NHT SB2/JBL SUB 550P x 2/Chromecast Audio.

You don't even need to spend that much. Our dish was down for a few weeks when our back deck was being replaced. I spend $30 on an antenna and get a great signal!Fronts: Polk RTi10

It has to be a setting in your cable box. if you go to the settings of the box and then go to the audio section there should be a dolby option. the same thing happened to me and i tried and tried all these options just to find i needed to press the dolby button in the settings. The i trouble shot this was to play a dvd (non hd) and i saw my receiver change to dolby so that told me my receiver was set up right, so the problem had to be on my direct tv reciever. hope this helpsAudio:
