Thank you in advance for at least reading this and maybe you can lead me in the right direction. I recently purchased a set of RM6900 speakers, which I really like. The real problem seems to be not much audio signal from my Sony HDTV. I connect to the TV via three wire component cable from the cable box (Scientific Atlanta 3250HD) as instructed by cable co. I then come from TV audio out via RCA to receiver input labeled TV/cable audio in. The problem is that I have to turn up the volume on the amp to 99-100% just to get any appreciable sound scaling range, and I have to drastically reduce amp volume before I switch to Tuner or I will blow speakers. I had an old cheapy amp and I just got a new Yamaha unit but I have to do the same thing, in fact, I now hear a hissing from Polk speakers because I think the amplitude is too high. Also, I tried hooking up the amp via Front speakers but I got almost zero bass, so for now I am using the single sub out jack to the LFE. What on earth am I doing wrong?

The TV has only one HDMI input which I use for DVD input but TV has an optical audio out.

try raising the volume half way on the amp and then raise the volume on the tv, sometimes the tv controls the output to the amp. If raising the volume on the tv doesnt work. You might have a setting in the tv menu for audio in or audio out.

Jake.....The TV volume is set to 100% and TV speakers set to OFF so output goes to External. The RCA audio out are Fixed/variable labeled, I control total system volume by raising/lowering cable box volume input.

What kind of tv do you have? Can you hook the cable box directly to the reciever, to make sure its the tv? On my Mit, I have to program the tv to let it know I have an AVR hooked to audio out. Your's might be different.

Problem Solved!!!! It was the TV clipping the audio output. I found a digital optical audio output on the cable box......I connected it to the optical in on Yamaha for TV/Cable and now I have PLENTY of audio amplitude. Receiver volume is now down to acceptable levels and bass is now full range adjustable. Now I am wondering if I should go back and connect my RM6900 speakers (front) series thru the sub or leave connected thru the sub out jack to the LFE input. Any last comments on the sub wiring?

Leave it the way it is.

I tend to agree with you....I will 'play' with a few sound fields and some good action movies with known sound effects and 'hear' how it feels to me.
