Shelving

I'm now up around 250+ dvd's and a couple hundred cd's. I have no room left to add the stacks on the floor, desk, ect.
Any suggestions on new media storage shelves would be appreciated.

I have relatives who use 2 400 disc sony cd players just for easy storage. Of course this is pretty pricey for just storage, but it works for them.

Personally I use Slappa cases after reading lots of great reviews for them online. I use a 360 Pro for my cds and three of their 90 DVD cases. I put them all in a flexy that I built, which doubles as storage and a table to put drinks and such on. I love the cases, very well built, very durable, and they look good. I do it just like the second picture on the site, all the covers in front of the dvds. Takes a while if you have a lot to do but once it is done it is much easier to find the dvd you want, and takes up much less space.

Attached is a picture of my flexy with the cases, you cant really see the cases just the labels. Thats space for 360 cds and 270 dvds, if I had a fourth dvd case it would be 360 dvds as well.

We went with standards (double slotted) and various sized shelves in my studio to hold cd's, dvd's, and books. We put them up nearly a decade ago and have been able to reconfigure the shelves multiple times as our library has shifted from cd's to dvd's... Of course - you need some wall space for that. :)

We also hung standards in the kitchen for a wall of shelving.

No pictures handy at the moment - but I can post a couple if you'd like later on.

I was thinking more in line of a piece of furniture. Something like Sanus (they don't have what I want) or something in that order.
I just wondered if anyone knew of a company that has nice multimedia storage units for a good price and great customer service like VTI

Maybe I've got the wrong word, but I'm fairly sure they're called standards - we bought them at Lowe's (and their images aren't loading at work or I'd point you to a photo...). Basically - it's a metal piece you screw into the wall that has slots in it, you buy a bracket that rests in those slots and then put a shelf on the brackets... It can look nice and modernish or like cheap shelves... depending on the decor and the quality of shelf used.

Works great in my studio where there's lots of synths and speakers and things and our kitchen which is lime green and purple and a lot of stainless steel stuff - but they'd look horrible in our bedroom with the nicer wood furniture.

ok..I see what you mean. I'm looking for something with a narrow profile...something designed for cd's and dvd's.

Do I spy a Faint Wet From Birth CD on the top of that rack?

    Demiurge,

Good eye, that it is along with a map of San Andreas for GTA below it. Good cd, imo a few great songs like "How Could I Forget" or "Southern Belles In London Sing". Now if you could tell what the cd on the bottom right of the bottom shelf is, or the top left of the bottom shelf I would be extremely impressed.

    ninerbj,

I always through out my solution because most people don't think of it for dvds. I personally had some cheap $50 pieces that I got from Racksandstands.com before I had the cases. They were built poorly and didn't look great but did the job well enough. You could start looking there, I remember they had hundreds of pieces for dvd storage.

While I know this isn't it - the one on the top left of the bottom shelf looks a bit like Audion - Suckfish ( http://www.discogs.com/release/515780 ) which is sitting next to me right now...

What the heck does "Solid Oak Veneer" mean?

Covered by veneer that's solid or a solid cover up by using Oak Veneer maybe.

It was one of those statements that just didn't register with my thought process.

I think G Orwell called it "Double Speak" in the book 1984.

It means that the veneer is genuine oak, placed over particle board or some other cheap wood. Rather than vinyl veneer, which is completely man-made.

If you scroll down and look at the left margin, you can sort by CD/DVD capacity...

Thanks for the link Steve. I am in need of some CD/DVD storage as well and there are a couple of nice looking racks (waiting for the smartass comments ) on that site. Have you purchased from them and if so how did it go?

No I haven't, found them in a search yesterday (oddly enough) because my current rack is over-flowing. They've got some nice racks, and shipping is included. I am going to order from them this week. I've been looking for a high capacity rack with doors, so my office doesn't look like a college dorm room.

    Gotcha

I would have understood the wording "Genuine Oak Veneer" but solid oak is solid oak here in furniture making land.

This is what I do, can you imagine what a rack that categorizes your disc, keeps them clean and safe and spits the one you want out when you need it would cost?

After I get the disc out of the changer I put it in my player and walla great music or video.

If you like racks that spin AudioAdvisor has a number of them in wood veener.

I've got two of these (from Steveinaz's link); cheap and look good. Planning to add a third one.

If you have an IKEA store nearby, you can pick up the "Billy" bookcase ($60.00-80.00 depending on finish) and outfit it with media storage dividers or extra shelfs. Here're a couple of pictures of mine (in black-brown and with doors)....

The glass in the doors are frosted. Each bookshelf holds about 600+ CDs and you can adjust the shelfs to store DVDs as well.

We have a "Billy" as well (although used for clothes) - definitely a decent unit for that little money.
