Sonance/Hometech in-wall

Let me start out by saying that I love Polk and use them where I can. So save the buy used polks on ebay speech, because I've looked. There are no in-wall deals.

Now there have been some deals for Sonance/Hometech in-wall speakers. I also have sort-of wholesale price access to another line by Sonance called HiFiWorks (also spelled Hi Fi Works for search purposes). Looks like all the same stuff, at least on the not so expensive side.

To be honest, I'm a huge fan of Polk medium low-end stuff (around $200-$250 a pair). I don't have the space (or budget) to do a home theatre setup like that and am leaning toward Sonance. I can get front 6" and (what seem like) darn good 6" ceilings for the rear and still come in well under the price of a pair of Polks that I like. I'm also not afraid of drywall repair or running wires (though that will be tougher with the baby around).

Does anyone have experience with Sonance? If not, what is your opinion of in-wall speakers in general? Plus, why are Polk in-wall more expensive than their regular counterparts?

I do appreciate any respone, because finding info/reviews on the web even in this forum is pretty tough on in-wall stuff.

I have seen a couple of spec houses that used some Hometech inwalls for a HT setup and whole house music. They were not anything I would use...ever. Very thin sounding and just poor SQ IMO. Hometech is contractor grade components.

Save your money and get something better. Several companies make good inwall stuff. I've listened to a couple of HT setups with inwalls (one Klipsh and one Boston I think) and they sounded very nice.

My sister-in-law had a company (in Canada) come out to quote her HT and whole house speakers. They were quoting the Sonance S622TR in ceiling for $375 Cdn per pair. We hit Future Shop instead, and picked up the Polk RC60i for $170 Cdn per pair (she bought 4 pair, so she got a good deal). She did pick up Sonance for outside, but it's just too cold to install yet (so I can't comment).

The Polk's sound very nice, though.

Thanks for the input. I guess I should have also pointed out that my $300 110 watt per channel Sony receiver won't properly drive the classic Model 10s that I have, even after extensive tweaking!!! ARRGH! I did try my RTI 20 5" speakers and they sound... okay on it.

So the other part of why I'm looking at Sonance is that we might move within the next few years and I unless I can get a real steal on Polks, I don't want to have to rip them out again. Thing is, I've been dying to actually have surround sound (have had "capable" receivers for years). The WAF (wife acceptance factor) keeps me from using my good stuff in the family room.

One last thing. I checked the prices on in-wall polks on uBid and ebay and still can get a pair of the higher end 6.5" THX dual tweeter ones AND pretty nice (on paper anyway) 6.5" dual tweeter ceiling mounted ones for about/a little more than the cheapest ebay Polk pairs. (Have to do ceiling in back because of tall furniture issues in our small townhouse.) I also happily noticed that if I hate the Sonance THX pair, I can sell for a profit on ebay as long as I don't beat them up. (Having a business license has its benefits.)

So unless you Polkers know of where I can get wholesale (non-bulk) pricing on in-wall Polks, I have to say I'm going with the Sonance line. Please let me know if you can! ;)
