If you use component out on your DVD, then your DVD is doing all the processing correct?

If you use HDMI out, does this pass all the processing on to the TV?

Is HDMI the equivilant of a digital out on a CD Player?

Since my Denon DVD-2910 can send a 720p signal via HDMI, and my HDTV is 720p native, should I use HDMI instead of component output? Is there a particular advantage to matching the resolution input/output?

    Steve,

Use of component out on the DVD should convert the signal to analog on the way out ... the TV will convert it back to digital ...

Use of HDMI out on the DVD will result in two less conversions ...

With reagrds to HDMI out of the DVD .vs. Digital out of a CD Player ... I assume you are asking about the audio signal ... HDMI out will provide a digital audio signal, but I don't know off hand if this is exactly the same as what would provided by digital optical/coax out.

    Personally I like to use:

    - HDMI out of the DVD directly to the TV for video as there is no conversion ...
    - Coax out of the DVD to the preamp/receiver for audio ...

    Steve,

If your TV is native 720P and you can get that out of the Denon's HDMI, then do. It will not only reduce the D/A & A/D conversions, but the picture will only have to be scaled up once by the DVD player, rather than the TV having to shrink or enlarge the already scaled picture to fit itself.

    PS ...

If you are getting a digital STB to use with this set up then this too should have a HDMI or DVI out, either of which can be connected directly to the TV with the corresponding cable as I believe the TV your getting has 2 HDMI inputs.

One of the things I've noticed trying to use component cables from STB to TV is that the video signal will be noticeably delayed from the audio. This can usually be compensated for in the audio path but it does demonstrate the extra ( unneeded / unwanted ? ) processing that happens using component cables.
